Watercolour painting of Catalina Flying Boat - Attached to rear of frame is a short history of the Catalina Flying Boat together with the service history of Owen and and his younger brother Roy MORTIMER who both served in the Royal Australian Air Force in the South West Pacific area during WW2 Developed as a naval patrol aircraft, the Consolidated PBY Catalina was a widely exported flying boat during World War II. Over the course of the conflict it served with a number of different nations in a variety of roles. In the Royal Australian Air Force, PBYs and PB2Bs (a variant built by Boeing in Canada) served as multi role bombers and scouts, the type eventually earning great renown among Australian aircrews. The motto of the Catalina squadrons was "The First and Furthest." This privilege was granted to our association in recognition of the establishment of an educational trust fund devised and funded by our members in order to educate to tertiary standards the children of personnel who lost their lives in the extreme sacrifice. When the functions of administring the program became too onerous for our members, then, and only then, Legacy undertook to carry the program through to its conclusion. Between Pratt & Whitney and numerous licensed companies, there were over 180,000 of these engines manufactured in a number of specifications. The B-24 Liberator would have been their major recipient but other famous aircraft using the same engine were the Consolidated Catalina flying boat and the Douglas DC3/C47/Dakota. Refer Wikipedia link for other aircraft that used this engine.As a result of the significant and ongoing usage of these engines in civil aircraft such as the Douglas DC3, they are by no means rare. It was painted by Legatee Cliff Hull and was donated after his death by his daughter, Elizabeth. According to the note, Legatee John Leeden is shown in the photos accepting the painting. It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. In World War 2 Legatee Foskett was a pilot in the RAAF and served as a Catalina Flying Boat Skipper in South East Asia and the Pacific. He joined Legacy in 1949. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. On the shape of the building it looks like the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Philip Island, or perhaps the Australian National Aviation Museum, in Moorabbin. Also present were L/ John Sullivan, L/ Joe Morton and his wife Mary Morton. The captions included: "Legatee Joe Morton, joined by his wife, Mary. Legatee Morton gave his RAAF overcoat and jacket to the Museum." "The Catalina fan club was out in force Legatees George Woodward and George Standish." This badge was issued to Mrs M Deacon (mother) of 67 Cramer St, Preston to commemorate her son Flying Officer Stanley Alfred DEACON (255057) who was lost in a Consolidated Catalina A-24-22 of No. 20 Squadron RAAF, on the night of 08/09March 1943. The aircraft flown by the Commanding Officer of No. 20 Squadron W.Cdr Francis Bloomfield Chapman (271349) with Flying Officer S.A.Deacon as R.D.F. Operator (ie. radio officer) and 7 other crew members departed Cairns, and later reported being on fire, probably force landing 30 miles south east of Gasmata. A 3-4 day air search failed to find any sign of the aircraft or survivors. Gasmata is located in New Britain, Bismarck Archipelago, Bismarck, New Guinea.
