1297 - Booklet with red heavy card cover and 24 pages inside and a four page supplement glued into rear cover giving details of the by-laws operating for the SEC tramways in Ballarat and Bendigo. Gives details of the definitions, fares and charges, sale of tickets, regulating number of passengers, stopping places, nuisances, smoking, dangerous goods, luggage and goods, general matters and fares broken into adult fares for each section and Children's fares and Pensioners' Concession fares for both Ballarat and Bendigo. Note - introduced decimal currency into the fares as well as pence. Document number on front cover "TYE 1-270". This by-law replaced or revoked all previous by-laws and amendments. Came in effect 1/10/1965 with a fare rise. Received Governor In Council approval on 24/8/1965. These fares have been amended in pencil for Ballarat. The amendment pasted into the rear of the booklet is dated 2nd August. 1966 and came into effect on 1/9/1966. 1297.1 - ditto, but actual used copy by D. J. Everett - see Reg. Item 2292 for details of SEC Ballarat Employee. On page one or title sheet, has an additional amendment pasted in - dated 14/1/1969 giving details of fare increases in Ballarat and Bendigo to come into effect 14/1/1969. Single sheet printed both side. See also Reg items 66 and 281 for this sheet of paper by itself. An article from a supplement to the Bulletin with a poem by Legatee Brian Armstrong written just before he passed away. It reflects on Foundation Day and the first 50 years of Service certificates that were being awarded. Legatee Armstrong had been president in 1937. The prom was called Accolade. Last Anzac Day a fine old Digger / Asked me to write him 'a sort of a letter' / Mentioning something of what he had done / As a private soldier in World War One. He had lived alone since he lost he wife / But a score of 'Grandies' adorned his life / They were always asking what he had done / As a Front Line Digger in World War One. He wanted to give them something to show / When he got his call and 'had to go' / But he couldn't remember and wasn't sure / When they fingered his medal and asked for more. He was one of our best and I knew him well / In those far off days of pain and hell / So I wrote recalling his scenes of strife / Especially one when he'd saved my life. Later I found a note at my gate / Just a line of thanks to 'my Dear Mate'. That grand old word so hardly won / In freezing trench and blinding sun / Fifty years gone but it's not too late / To be proud when a Digger still calls you Mate. Thrice in our time have the War Bells tolled / And thrice does the Legacy tale unfold. Fifty years gone but it's never too late / To guard the Kin of a fallen mate. The story is written for all to see / The 'Why' and the 'How' of Legacy / But it still rings true that it all began / With the trust in his mate of a War-Torn Man. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. The red wattlebird is a passerine bird native to southern Australia. Measuring 33–37 cm (13–14.5 inches) in length, it ranks as the second-largest species among Australian honeyeaters. The species was first described by John White in 1790, and three subspecies are currently recognised. The red wattlebird is found across southeast Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and southwest Western Australia, inhabiting open forests, woodlands, and urban gardens or parks. Known for its loud and conspicuous presence, the red wattlebird primarily forages in trees, although it occasionally searches for food on the ground. As one of the world's largest nectar-feeding birds, it consumes nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, supplementing its diet with insects. Territorial and sometimes aggressive, it defends rich nectar sources from other bird species. Breeding occurs throughout its range, with the species constructing cup-shaped nests in trees and raising one or two broods annually. Despite localized declines due to habitat loss, the red wattlebird is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. This specimen was falsely identified as a yellow wattlebird in original catalogue records and is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.The red wattlebird has predominantly grey-brown plumage, featuring red eyes, pale pinkish-red wattles on each side of the neck, white streaking on the chest, and a prominent yellow patch on the lower belly.
