Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. In 1990, it was renamed the Monash University College and in 1993 became the Gippsland Campus of Monash University. In 2016, Federation University Australia announced plans to take possession, over a two-year period, of Monash’s Berwick Campus in the south-east corridor of Melbourne. Federation University Australia, or FedUni, is headquartered in Ballarat and offers programs in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training to regional Victoria and beyond. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future. Its regional character sets a framework for the University’s priorities but does not constrain it from serving wider community interests, nationally and internationally. The name Federation University Australia was chosen to convey the scope and capacity of an expanded regional university with a federated network of campuses. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was established in September 1968. On its establishment, the institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College which had commenced diploma teaching in 1929. Initially, all the Institute's teaching was conducted in the diploma building of the Yallourn Technical College. In 1972 the Institute transferred part of its operations to the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surrounds near the township of Churchill south of Morwell. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was opened on 20 November 1976. Jan Feder was a student at the Gippsland Centre of Art and Design in the 1980s. She had started studying ceramics in Adelaide, deciding to continue here study at Churchill under Hedley Potts' tutelage after moving to Strezlecki. In her final year Jan was an on-campus weekday resident to save on the travel time. After Jan's untimely death in 1981 a ceramics collection was amassed to her memory, featuring work of international, national and local significance. The following information was the preface of the 1985 GIAE handbook: The Gippsland institute of Advanced Education was established by an Order-in-Council in September, 1968, but, owes its origin to engineering diploma courses established in 1928 to service the developing electrical industry. The Council of the Institute includes members of the Gippsland community who are prominent in industry, commerce, education and the professions, the Director of the institute, the representative of the academic staff, of general staff, of students and of the Convocation of the Institute. In 1972 the Institute occupied the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surroundings near the township of Churchill, ten kilometres south of Morwell and one hundred and sixty kilometres east of Melbourne. Engineering laboratories are temporarily located in buildings on the site of the Yallourn College of TAFE at Newborough and they will be consolidated on the Churchill campus by the end on 1985. In 1974 new buildings were completed under a self-help program to house the School of Visual Arts. A building complex to provide the first stages of the permanent library and the Union, and accommodation for the School of Business and Social Sciences was completed in 1976. An Education building, an Applied Science building and student residential buildings for 108 student places were completed at the beginning on 1976. The Binishell, a multi-purpose facility was completed in 1980. On its establishment, the Institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses which were previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College. These were diploma in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, and Business, all of which were recognised by the appropriate professional bodies. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education is the only centre of Higher Education east of Melbourne and offers a range of vocational courses at associate diploma, diploma, degree, graduate degree and master levels to meet the educational needs of the Gippsland regions. Janet MANSFIELD (1934-2013 ) Born Sydney, New South Wales Janet Mansfield studied Ceramics at the National School of Art, East Sydney Technical College in 1964 to 1965. She received a Crafts Board Grants in 1974 to study in the United States of America; to research salt glaze technique in 1975; to exhibit in Japan in 1985; to travel to Hungary fir a symposium, and an Australia-Japan Foundation Grant in 1977 to study in Japan. She was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in 1980 and a Spotkanie guest in 1984. Her work was fired to wood kilns and taken to stoneware temperatures. She used salt for shorter firings, or in the anagama kiln depended on the ash and flame for glaze effects. Janet Mansfield has been editor of 'Pottery in Australia' and 'Ceramics: Art and Perception'. In 1987 she was awarded an Order Of Australia Medal for services to art and ceramics. In 1980 Janet Mansfield was a visiting lecturer at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. Sandra JOHNSTONE (1936-01/1991) Worked California, USA Sandra Johnstone undertook graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley, California. From 1957 she worked as a studio potter. Between 1983 and 1990 she was a teacher at Napa Valley College, Napa, California. She is known for her large wheel thrown stoneware pots, often deeply incised both on interior and exterior surfaces. This photographic exhibition was developed by the Federation University-led Community Wellbeing research stream of the Hazelwood Health Study in collaboration with Morwell Neighbourhood House and Gippsland Centre for Art and Design at Federation University Australia. It highlights people's hopes for the future of Morwell has its roots in two unexpected places: the Hazelwood mine fire in 2014 and an academic study into community recovery from that fire. In late summer of 2014 a bushfire spread to the coal mine near the town of Morwell in the LaTrobe Valley, in south-eastern Victoria. The Hazelwood mine fire burned for 45 days, shrouding communities - especially Morwell - in smoke and ash. Strong calls by the community for an investigation into the health impacts of the Hazelwood Mine Fire led to the Department of Health's (Know the Department of Health and Human Services) decision to fund a ten year study of the potential health effects of this smoke event (Known as the Hazelwood Health Study). This exhibition came out of work undertaken by the Community Wellbeing Stream of the Hazelwood Health Study during 2016 and 2017. Based at Federation University Australia's Gippsland Campus, just a few kilometres from where the fire took place, one of our Study's main aims has been to find out from the community how the smoke event impacted on community wellbeing. We also planned to talk to community members about the effectiveness of community rebuilding activities, and find our how these have aided recovery following the smoke event. In 2017 we began working with community organisations on a project to foster community recovery and wellbeing. What emerged from these discussions was the idea for a photographic exhibition, on the theme of 'Our hopes for the future of Morwell'. Invitations to participate were extended to up to 50 members of various community groups. The groups were asked to think of some object that symbolizes their hopes for the future of Morwell. Individuals were then invited to attend a photographic session kindly hosted by the Morwell Neighbourhood House. Each individual was to hold this object while it was photographed, as well as explain what the object represented in terms of Morwell's future. Out of this process twenty nine photographs with their captions were produced, enlarged and framed for exhibiting. Hedley POTTS (09/11/1936 - 01/06/2023) Hedley Potts studied ceramics at RMIT in the early 1960s. In 1974 he received an Australian Council Crafts Board grant to study overseas, and was visiting artist at the Goldsmith's College, University of London in 1979. He was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education in 1972 when he introduced Ceramics into the program fo the first time. By the 1980s Potts he was a senior lecturer in Ceramics at Monash University's Churchill Campus (now Federation University). In 1995, Hedley Potts was appointed artist in residence at Kingston Arts Centre in Moorabbin. He was one of the artists represented in the Ceramics Victoria Inc 40th Anniversary exhibition in 2009.
