This item is believed to have been made in or around the Staffordshire area in the United Kingdom. Over 1500 pottery firms have operated in Stoke-on-Trent since the early 1700's - Some lasted only a few years and some for well over 200 years. Some potters built and owned their own works. Many others were tenants in works built by others and a succession of potters occupied the same works. It was also a common practice for a works to be split between two different pottery companies or for a larger manufacturer to let out a smaller section of his works to a potter who would make wares which were not of interest to the pot works owner. Some potters purchased 'blanks' from other manufacturers and put their own decoration on them some items have two back stamps some have no marks at all. In the beginning of the19th century, the main mode of transportation was the horse and carriage. Even after the advent of the railway, remote areas still relied on the horse for local transport.Until Australian coachbuilders began making buggies from the 1860s, most were made in America Buggies with four wheels were light but comfortable. Many had hoods to keep the sun and rain off passengers. They were generally owned by doctors, ‘squatters’ and business people. Some had small turn-out seats at the back for children. Both the Light switch and Door knob were used in Box Cottage during the late 19thC and early 20thC by the Box and Rietman families. William and Elizabeth Box purchased the two ten acre Lots of land with the Cottage in 1868 where they raised their family of 12 children and developed a flower garden producing seedlings. August and Frieda Rietman rented the Cottage 1917 with 1 acre of land and purchased it in 1935 where they raised 2 children while August established Rietman's Landscaping Pty Ltd making pressed concrete garden furniture. Item used to contain the compressor fuse on tram 14, salvaged during the project to renew the wiring of the tram. The box was located alongside the circuit breaker at No. 2 end of the tram. Demonstrates an item fitted to a tramcar to contain a renewable fuse.Wooden box containing a fuse, fuse holder and short sections of associated wire. The fuse holder is secured to the base of the box with brass screws. The box has a cover secured with a brass screw. There are two pieces of wire secured on the ceramic fuse holder, one of which the insulation has deteriorated and fallen off. This type of cup was designed for use by an adult and was in common usage from the early 1900s to the 1930s. Feeding cups were used both in the home and in hospitals, and were also often made of white enamel. Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920. She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. The Lady Loch was a Lighthouse Tender built in 1886 by Campbell, Sloss & McCann in Footscray, for the Victorian Dept. of Public Works. The ship was named after Lady Elizabeth Loch, wife of Sir Henry Loch, Governor of Victoria from 1884 -1889. It was an iron Steamship of 531 tons. Built for use as a lighthouse tender and serviced lighthouses around the south east coast and Tasmania. Owned by Victorian Ports and Harbours Department.
