This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Greystones station was originally part of the Glenmore run, established in 1840 by Charles Griffith. Originally a run of 55,00 acres, Glenmore was subdivided in the 1870s to form the Greystones property, owned and managed by Molesworth Greene, the nephew of Charles Griffith. The property had 11,000 sheep and was renowned for its high quality wool. In November 2023, the property of 4033 hectares was sold to overseas investors. The wool industry was a major industry in the development of the Australian economy from pre-colonial times. Charles Griffith was born in Kildare, Ireland in 1808. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin acquiring a B.A. in 1829 and an M.A. in 1832 before being admitted to practice as barister. In 1840 he emigrated to Australia arriving in the Port Phillip District in November 1840. Soon after arriving he and his friend James Moore formed a business partnership and acquired land in the Parwan Valley near Bacchus Marsh. This land had been in the possession of a Mr. McKenzie who agreed to sell his land and sheep to Griffith and Moore. The property they acquired came to be known as Glenmore. The partnership with James Moore lasted until 1848. In 1846, whilst in Ireland, Griffith married Miss Jane Catherine Magee, then returned to Glenmore and later took his nephew, Molesworth Richard Greene, into partnership, which arrangement proved to be long and prosperous. In 1857, they bought runs at Mount Hope and Mount Pyramid, which they kept until the days of free selection. Griffith led an active and successful public life. He was a member of the new Victorian Legislative Council in 1851, and was later an elected representative of the Legislative Assembly 1853-1859. He occupied many important public positions, including that of magistrate for Bacchus Marsh. Griffith was a devout Anglican and hosted Bishop Charles Perry at his station near Bacchus Marsh in 1849. He died in 1863 at his home in South Yarra. The diary is a detailed account of Griffith's voyage from Ireland to Australia and of his early months in Melbourne. After this it covers his early months establishing himself on his property, Glenmore, near Bacchus Marsh. The timeline of the diary stretches across 1840 and 1841. Griffith was an educated gentleman who made detailed observations about the environment he found himself in. The diary is particularly notable for Griffith's commentary about his interactions with people from first nations, and reveals some of his thinking about Colonial policies directed at first nations people. The diary also includes some sketches of individual first nations people along with some sketches of flora and fauna. The two land auction plans shown in this record relate to the sale of land from the Glenmore Estate property. The Glenmore property was established by C.J. (Charles James) Griffith and James Moore around 1840. Moore sold his interest to Moelesworth Greene in 1848. Greene was the nephew of the other owner Charles Griffith who died in 1863. From around the 1870s onwards parts of the Estate were subdivided and put up for sale or lease. In subsequent decades more changes in ownership occurred. These two plans document another major sale of the land from the original Glenmore Estate including part of the estate which had become used for dairy farming and was at that time known as the Glenvale Estate. Two single page maps pasted together on a single page of a bound volume of maps. One map shows 15 separate lots of land for sale. The other map which has the words 'Glenvale Estate' at the top of the map shows 4 lots of land for sale. Both parcels of land were originally part of the Glenmore Estate a pastoral holding belonging to C.J. Griffith and James Moore which the began in the Rowsley area south west of Bacchus Marsh in the 1840s. The maps are pasted into a bound volume containing 76 maps or plans in total. The photograph shows a view of an extensive single-storey homestead consisting of three adjoining buildings, with a further building on the left of the main property. The series of three buildings is built in an elevated position, with pathways leading through a garden. At the front there is a vegetable garden which seems to be still in a state of development. The main house, possibly of brick, is set at an angle to the other two in this complex. It has a hip roof with a concave verandah on two sides with arched barge boards and simple unadorned pillars. There appears to be a hammock slung between two pillars. Two chimneys can be seen on this dwelling.The adjoining building is of a simpler design, with a lower roof line and a verandah running along the front. Two chimneys can be seen, one emitting smoke. This middle building may be a kitchen and rooms for day-to-day use. The third building is also of a simpler design, with a gable above a verandah. The purpose of this building is less clear. The different styles of construction suggest that these buildings were built separately at different times for different purposes. To the left of the main group of buildings is another cottage, smaller and of a simpler design. A fence runs along the front, clearly separating this building from the others, suggesting it may have been the dwelling of an overseer.On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. This photo evokes Australian stories of shearing as an occupation, the hard work, the itinerant life-style, its legends and heroes. A strong part of the Australian identity is based on the perceptions of shearers. Banjo Paterson's song "Click Go The Shears" is still widely known and sung; the Tom Roberts painting" Shearing the Rams" is a much-loved and reproduced painting. The story of Jackie Howe who shore a record 321 sheep in October 1892 in seven hours and forty minutes remains an integral part of the shearing canon. In modern times, the film "Sunday Too Far Away", starring Jack Thompson, is ever-popular. The centrality of the shearer in Australia's understanding of itself may be traced to the central role played by the wool industry in the nation's economy, dating from its earliest colonial days. A Bogong ski team travelled to the South Island, New Zealand in 1950 and raced in the Wigley Cup, becoming the first Australian club team to compete in New Zealand. The Nissen rope tow was built by Toni and Skippy St Elmo in 1951, but after 5 years it became obvious another tow was needed for the novice and intermediate skiers. A proposal was put to the Management Committee to erect a Village rope tow, with interested people becoming shareholders. This tow, designed by Albury engineer, Jock Wilson, was working by 1958. Fred Griffiths and some of his family members were amongst the shareholders. Fred guaranteed the Club for finance from the Bank of NSW. The first portion of the prefabricated building was constructed in Albury. It was transported to Falls Creek on the back of Fred’s truck and erected in one day. This was the bathroom section and the rest was completed in 1950. The original lodge was burned down in 1952 and a new one built the following year. In 1955, Fred also built the Bowna Lodge for his family in partnership with David Fairbairn. He became head of the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A.) and successfully applied to run the Australian Ski Championships. Fred also inaugurated children’s races at Falls Creek and ran them for about 20 years. He also formed the company “Falls Creek Ski Tows”. In 1956 Fred along with a group of key people selected the site for Thredbo Village. Fred and his brother sold Toonallook in sections between 1951 and 1974. C. Griffith;s truck. Taken at Bogong Township at 9 A.M. when there was a 3 hours delay owing to a broken fan belt. Date 13/3/49. No. 2 - The arrival of the material at the site on Falls Creek. Time 1.30 P.M. Club's Conveyancer "Jackson" in background. No. 3. - Unloading material at the site. "Jackson" again in background. These photos are part of the Fred Griffith Collection. Frederick Charles “Fred” Griffith was born in Albury, NSW on 2 March 1910. Educated in Albury and Geelong Grammar. Beginning in 1927 he spent many years working first as a jackeroo and on a range of prominent pastoral and merino stud properties in NSW and Queensland. In 1935 he repurchased his former family property “Toonallook", Bowna, NSW and developed it to be the largest Romney Marsh stud in the world, exporting rams to Argentina. He introduced many innovative practices on his property including rabbit control measures and aerial crop dusting. He was an active member of the Albury Show Society and in 1949 established the Albury Sheep Show. Fred was also the Albury representative on the Graziers’ Association Council for over 30 years. He became a life member of both the Albury and Commercial Clubs. Fred’s greatest hobby was snow skiing. His first visit to the snow was to Kosciusko in 1919. The Albury Ski Club was formed in 1935 and Fred was an inaugural member. In 1949 they were granted a site at Falls Creek to build their own lodge. Fred guaranteed the Club for finance from the Bank of NSW. The first portion of the prefabricated building was constructed in Albury. It was transported to Falls Creek on the back of Fred’s truck and erected in one day. This was the bathroom section and the rest was completed in 1950. The original lodge was burned down in 1952 and a new one built the following year. In 1955, Fred also built the Bowna Lodge for his family in partnership with David Fairbairn. He became head of the North Eastern District Skiing Association (N.E.D.S.A.) and successfully applied to run the Australian Ski Championships. Fred also inaugurated children’s races at Falls Creek and ran them for about 20 years. He also formed the company “Falls Creek Ski Tows”. In 1956 Fred along with a group of key people selected the site for Thredbo Village. Fred and his brother sold Toonallook in sections between 1951 and 1974. He moved to Albury and set up as a landscape gardener and fencing contractor.
