Churchill Island Heritage Farm has a large photographic collection dating from the nineteenth century. The early forties saw rapid growth of Bogong Village, with single and married men’s quarters, workshops, mess huts and administrative offices. The facilities necessary for communal living were quickly in place- a post office, police station, co-op store, medical centre, community hall/theatre, tennis courts and school. Bogong Primary School opened in 1941 to provide an education for the families of employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The school had up to date equipment and received glowing reports from school inspectors. It closed circa 1970.The Bogong State School was opened for the children of S.E.C.V. workers who lived in Bogong in a remote part of north east Victoria. Joy is wearing a long-sleeved dress with a collar, and she has a bow or large clip in her hair. John has a dark shirt and lighter overalls. Lynette, who isabout seven months old, is sitting up in a pram. She has a harness on. Elaine is around three months old and is lying in a wicker pram. Henny and Cisca, two Dutch girls, are wearing gingham dresses and cardigans. Henny's dress has two rows of rickrack on the skirt. In a fenced-off paddock behind the children, a corner of a shed can be seen. There is a tyre swing on a large tree. A dark tray truck is parked on slightly higher ground. Dated c. 1950s.

The photo probably includes Barbara, Ken and Laurie Young, the children of Ernest Lance (Lance) Young and his wife Beryl Mair who married in 1939 and came to 11 York Street during the WW2 years. The donor does not recognise all of the children. Linda Lawrence is the tallest girl; her brother Ken is largely obscured. Laurie is the youngest girl with the pigtails. Her sister Barbara is at the back. The Lawrence family lived next door at 15 York Street (there was no 13 York Street). Boys scramble over a 1920's style car, in the front gardens of RVIB St Kilda Road. One sits on the roof and another on the bonnet, both reaching to feel the windscreen wipers. Three boys are at the front, touching the engine, whilst two more touch the front of the tyre and another boy touches the rear of the tyre. In this image two children are playing checkers at school. The tactile board has walls around each square and the children feel where each piece is placed. From the image, the black have a smooth top, whilst the white has a circle engraved into the top. Colour slide of children playing on a slide at Government House. Melbourne Legacy held an annual Christmas Party for Junior Legatees and Widows at Government House for many years. The year is unknown but likely to be during the 1950s. A group of slides in glass mounts with green tape are probably from a couple of consecutive years. They will be catalogued separately. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A home sewing needle kit. These paper sleeved novelty needle books were available in the late 19th Century. They were often free as a promotional give-away. In the 1900's they were colourful and fun.A vintage Novelty Needle Book made in Japan with 50 needles mounted inside a pop up card. The needles are presented in gold and red strips attached to a coloured card depicting two small children playing on a see-saw with their teddy bear in a garden. Five needles are missing. The back of the card is yellow and shows a girl holding a red rose.'Novelty Needle Book 50 Needles' is printed on the front of the card which shows two children playing on a see-saw with their teddy bear.
