Photographs of Junior Legatees kayaking on the McAllister River in Licola. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. Including an annual two week camp, usually in January. The venue varied over the years. It was with a group of photos from the 1990's in a folio with paper labels. It is possible these photos are from two different dates. This photograph is of Christina Giles, who died in Wangoom, Warrnambool, in 1899 at 7 years, 5 months and 4 days old and is one of many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Items donated by the family have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles and mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six, some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat and later some children at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. Jordan, Warrnambool refers to Joseph Jordan who operated a photographic studio in Warrnambool from the late 1880s. His work was prevelent in Victoria's Western District of Victoria.This photograph of Christina Giles is of social significance at a local level, because it not only illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill during it’s establishment. But the Giles collection also gives us today a snapshot into what domestic life was like in early colonial times prior to Federation and the high mortality rates amongst children during the early years of colonial settlement. Mrs Clive Robinson, née Christina “Nin” McMaster Smartly attired in fedora and lace-up highland dancing style shoes, Australian Team Captain Mrs Clive Robinson’s tartan kick pleat skirt flies up as she practises her swing. Mrs Clive “Nin” Robinson (1985-1971) was a NSW golf champion. Raised on a 5,000 acre sheep station, during WWII she drove a charcoal burning truck and cooked for the forces at Air Force House. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Mrs Clive Robinson née Christina Jeanie McMaster, known as "Nin" Mrs Clive Robinson (1895-1971) was a NSW golf champion. She won the Australian Women's amateur golf championship in 1934. Nin was captain of the team who won the Tasman Cup against New Zealand in 1934. She was the captain of the Australian team who competed against the visiting British women’s team in the Australian Women's Golf Championship in 1935 at Royal Melbourne. In 1936 Nin won the NSW Ladies Championship. Nin was raised by parents Mr and Mrs John McMaster on an 8000 acre sheep station called "Weetalabah” near Coolah, 135 kilometres northeast of Dubbo NSW. In 1923 she married Dr. Clive Robinson, a Macquarie Street specialist, and they lived in Point Piper with their daughter Diana. During WWII Nin drove a charcoal burning truck and cooked for the forces at Air Force House. She died of leukemia in 1971. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was appointed in 1934 as the Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and Conducting and was a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frank was awarded an M.B.E. in 1967. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Printed 64 page booklet with the front cover printed in navy blue and black. The rest is printed in black. The booklet is the Draft Report of the National Music Conference of November 18-21 1960, entitled 'Music in Britain - Today and Tomorrow'. It was sponsored by the National Music Council of Great Britain. In Commission 5, Frank Wright is the Rapporteur for the session entitled 'Music for Amateurs'.
