The Kew City Hall, designed by the architect Harold Bartlett of Leith & Bartlett, was opened by The Premier The Hon HE Bolte on 23rd April 1960. Rate Book evidence records that by 1870 Charles Vickers, architect, was the occupier of this house, having an NA.V. at that date o f£1105, although it is apparent that the house was in fact built by 1864, from the dat; set in the brickwork above the main door. In 1873 the property was purchased by David Beath, a merchant, and it was in the following year that the house was first recorded as 'Ivy Grange'. Beath was a deeply religious man and was a foundation member of both the Congregational and the Presbyterian (the Church of Scotland) Churches of Kew . He added, probably the tower wing, to the house in 1877 when architects Crouch and Wilson called tenders in that year 'for the erection of bluestone additions to (a) villa at Kew, for Davis Beath Esq.' The house was again added to in 1885 by the leading firm Reed, Henderson and Smart. For a number of years in the 1920s 'Ivy Grange' was used as a private mental hospital and is currently a guest house. In 1921 a fete was held at Ivy Grange in aid of building a new church (Sacred Heart, Kew): "Garden Fete in Aid of New Church, Kew. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Beautiful weather favoured the opening of a garden fete at "Ivy Grange," the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lawlor, Malmsbury and Princess streets, Kew, on last Saturday afternoon, in aid of the fine new Church of the Sacred Heart, Kew, which is now receiving its finishing touches. Not content to wait for the official opening, the lady stallholders did a good business on the previous evening. The ceremony was performed" by the Very Rev. Dean Hegarty, P.P., V.F. (Carlton), with whom were associated the Rev. J. Manly, P.P. (Kew), and the Rev. R. S. Benson, P.P. (South Yarra), Mr. and Mrs. J. Lawlor, and others. Fr. Manly, who was cordially received, said he desired to thank Mr. and Mrs. Lawlor for lending their charming grounds, and for the trouble, time and expense they had given to preparing for the fete. He wished to thank Dean Hegarty for coming to open the fete. The Dean had been a dear and lifelong friend of the late Fr. O'Donoghoe, the beloved pastor of the Kew parish. Next June the Dean would celebrate the golden jubilee of his priesthood, so they could see that he was not a young man. (Laughter.) He hoped that the fete would be a great success, and that when his Grace the Archbishop —: (applause) — should open the new church, he (the speaker) would be able to present a satisfactory financial statement. (Applause.) Dean Hegarty, who was very cordially received, said it was a source of great pleasure to him to come to Kew, of which he entertained many pleasant recollections. The new church would have delighted the heart of their late beloved pastor, but it had pleased God to take him to a holler temple. His mantle had fallen on worthy shoulders, in the person of Fr. Manly—(applause)—who was carrying on the work of the parish well and vigorously. (Applause.) Some wondered how these great works were successfully accomplished. The prime factor in the wonderful progress of the Church— the work of the people, priests and nuns—was their deep, abiding Catholic faith. (Applause.) Kew was not by any means a large parish, yet look at the magnificent church that Fr. Manly was building on the hill! He said to his people, "Come, follow me, and we shall win through." (Applause.) It gave him great pleasure to declare the fete open, and he wished it the highest measure of success. (Prolonged applause.) Mr. J. Lawlor, who was greeted with applause, in moving a hearty vote of thanks to Dean Hegarty for his presence and support, said he knew of the great work done by the Dean in Gippsland, where he (the speaker) lived when a young man. The Dean ministered to a parish at that time as large as was the diocese of Sale to-day. The Dean and Fr. Manly reflected credit on the pioneer priests, who had laid well and solidly the foundations, of religion in Victoria. (Applause.) He was glad that reference had been~made to the work of their late beloved pastor, Fr. O'Donoghoe. : Mr. Pierce Cody seconded the motion, which, was carried by acclamation. Stations of the Cross by Clifton Pugh is a contempooray art piece in four sections making up 11 stations of the cross. It was commissioned by the Catholic parish in Eltham (Our Lady Help of Christians) in 1961 Published: Nillumbik Now and Then /​ Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p81 Art is an important means of nurturing faith at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Henry Street, Eltham. The Stations of the Cross by Clifton Pugh and The Crucifix with the Ascending Jesus by sculptor Charles Rocco are two of the fine works that enhance the parishioners’ worship. These two inspiring works of art were added in 2001 – long after Roman Catholics began worshipping in Eltham around 1864. This beautiful worship centre was built following hardship and change – for parishioners have endured their church being destroyed by fire and have built four churches since they first worshipped together. Before 1864, according to local legend, a visiting priest administered sacraments in the parlour of former convict-turned-respected citizen Thomas Sweeney at Sweeneys Lane, Eltham.1 The first church was blessed in September, 1865, by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr Goold. It stood on an acre (0.4ha) of land in Little Eltham as that area was known then, near the present Fordhams and Main Roads and was part of the Heidelberg Church Parish. In 1912 the church was relocated to a new building on the present primary school site at 1 Henry Street. This was closer to the town centre, which had moved from Little Eltham after the railway line was extended to Eltham in 1902.2 In 1958 the church split from the Sacred Heart parish, Diamond Creek, to become a parish in its own right, with Father Tom Curran as inaugural priest. Not long after in 1961, a fire destroyed the church and huge working bees under the prominent Catholic builders, the Sibbel brothers, rebuilt and extended it, using the original altar from the first church. It was then that builder and parishioner Herman Sibbel asked his friend, artist Clifton Pugh, to paint the Stations of the Cross for the church. But the priest, Father Curran, neither approved of Pugh’s bohemian reputation nor liked the paintings, so they were hung in the corridor of Our Lady’s Primary School instead. The parishioners almost sold the paintings in 1989 to pay for major school renovations. However the paintings remained there for about 40 years, until 2001, when the church was extensively renovated by Father Barry Caldwell. Another change awaited the church, as it outgrew its building, later to be used as the school hall. So, in 1976, the present church was built across the road. Three beautiful stained-glass windows depicting the Passion, Death, Resurrection and the presence of Christ’s Spirit, link these with the church’s experiences. The first depicts a bushfire in Eltham, referring to their church damaged by fire. Another represents the Resurrection of Christ with new growth on a blackened stump and the Holy Spirit is represented by the Southern Cross. A window depicting Our Lady Help of Christians by parishioner Bill Peperkamp, was donated by parishioners to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Father Desmond G Jenkins’ ordination to the priesthood on July 27, 1977. This, with the statue of Mary, creates a Marian shrine. In the 14 Stations of the Cross painted on four masonite panels Pugh captures the pathos of the suffering Christ and his disciples.3 The figures are stylised, except intriguingly, that of Pontias Pilate, who looks like Clifton Pugh. Charles Rocco’s sculpture is an extraordinary Jesus figure being raised from the Cross. The delicate stainless steel mesh of the figure creates a sense of the power of God over death. The organ, built in 1868 by George Fincham and Sons, was first installed in the All Saints’ Anglican Church, East St Kilda, then in the St Andrews Church, Clifton Hill. It was rebuilt into a modern instrument with a donation from parishioner Jim Murray, in memory of his wife Gwendolene Mary.4 Church members created their own work of art in front of the entrance, by painting designs and messages on 700 tiles. This work indicates the strong church family and faith expressed in art, that awaits the worshipper inside.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Victorian Heritage Database H0704 FORMER UNION CHURCH 84-86 ORRONG ROAD ELSTERNWICK https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/428 The Former Union Church, Elsternwick, designed by the architect George de Lacy Evans, and erected in 1889-90 is a building of historical and architectural significance for the following reasons:- (1) it is a rare and well- developed example of the early French Gothic manner as popularised through the muscular Victorian re-interpretation of English architect William Burgess, which in turn were derived from the publications of EE Viollet-le-Duc. Other Victorian cases of detailing derived from Viollet-le-Duc include Barwon Park (1868), the Presbyterian Church at Skipton (1871), the Bourke Street West Police Station by Bindley and Brittingham (PWD) dating from 1888-9 and the Lutheran Manse, East Melbourne by JAB Koch (1890). However, none of these buildings relates closely in form to the Union Church, Elsternwick. The only building which has been identified as closely comparable is The Bairnsdale Court House by AJ Macdonald (PWD) which dates from 1892. (2) the use of bright red brickwork is of significance, as the Former Union Church is believed to be only the second church building in Victoria to employ this material as a matter of conscious choice. Amongst red brick churches, it is thought to be preceded only by Reed, Henderson And Smart's Sacred Heart (1884), a Renaissance inspired design. (3) the building is believed to be a rare, possibly unique, surviving example of a church building erected for dual use by the Congregationalists and Baptists.
