Circa Early 1900's: Band in the Park. Photograph is black and white. A music band in a park. There are five rows of musicians. Towards the left side of the rows, there is a drummer and four saxophone players. In total, there are fourteen saxophone players. The rest of the men in this photograph play other instruments. There are 3 men with boater hats, 3 with bowler hats, 6 with stetson hats and three men in soldiers uniforms with white helmets. On the right side of the photograph, there are two boys dressed in white suits, one was taller and the other was little. There was an older man dressed in white in the fifth row, right in the middle. Ordsall, renamed Southesk in the 20th century was built for John Halfey in or before 1865. The house was rebuilt in the 1870s to designs by architect Michael Hennessy. In 1882 the house was redecorated by the firm of Culls Hill & Co., who hired the artists 'Mr Vandenbrandt' and 'Signor Rizzi" to paint the ceilings of the ballroom and the drawingroom. The artistic triumph was described in detail in The Argus, 30 October, 1882. In 1947, Southesk was purchased by the Kew City Council. For 23 years it was used as a meeting place for community groups. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Corner residence circa 1900: Swedish born Karl Van Damme arrived on the Bendigo diggings in about 1852 and established himself as a tobacconist at 85 Pall Mall, next to the Shamrock Hotel. Although he had been living at the corner of View and Valentine streets in Sandhurst as early as 1883 it was not until 1898 that William Beebe designed a Queen Victoria style building erected by G.A. Davey for Van Damme. By 1905, van Damme, recorded as a tobacco merchant and importer, had established a branch at 143 Pall Mall, near Mitchell street. He sold the business at 85 Pall Mall in 1909, but remained at number 143 until the early 1920s. By this time it was known as Pikes Buildings. Reproduction mop hat made from cotton organza and grosgrain ribbon. The dress is made from a fine herringbone cotton fabric in the style of 1900s uniform. Apron with high round neck [circa 1920] starched cotton, has a repair to a tear in the bib, hand darning. Rust mark on right shoulder. Two starched cuffs with rust marks. Belt made from starched cotton, Key chain [reproduction] with small metal scissors and 4 keys.
