Premier Town Awards are awarded by the Victorian State Government to regional communities that best protect and enhance their environment through innovative initiatives. The award recognizes success in litter prevention, waste management and environmental projects and is designed to encourage tourism. The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. The shire's administration centre was in Strathfieldsaye until 1972 when new offices were opened in Kennington. This coat of arms was commissioned for the front of the shire hall building.Brass painted coat of arms or emblem within a circle of the Shire of Strathfieldsaye. As early as 1947 there was a request to have a swimming pool in the White Hills Botanic Gardens, and while the proposal was rejected by Council for many years, continued lobbying from the local community eventually saw it approved. The land had originally been reserved for botanic garden purposes only and it was required to be re-reserved for botanic and recreation purposes, to allow a different use. By 1956 the land was officially re-gazetted, excavation started in 1957 and the pool was completed by 1959. The gardens, in which the pool is situated, is one of the earliest botanic gardens in regional Victoria. It was included on the Victorian Heritage Register in 2001. Thelma Randles Collection. Steve Gibbons, Federal Member for Bendigo, suggests selling non-heritage parts of the Fortuna Villa property to fund maintenance of the historic mansion, ornamental lake, and mining battery. Non-heritage areas could be subdivided for private housing and possibly a health or aged-care facility. A new road connecting Marble and Chum streets could open up the site for these developments. The land west of the heritage lake and buildings is proposed for housing, while the corner of Chum and Booth streets is suggested for a health or aged-care facility. Gibbons emphasizes that only the original George Lansell property and its historic buildings are of heritage value; army-era buildings are not. He proposes that proceeds from development and ongoing rates be set aside to fund future maintenance of the heritage assets. Gibbons insists the mansion should remain in public ownership to preserve George Lansell's legacy and avoid burdening taxpayers or ratepayers. He is open to other ideas for the property's future use but stresses the need for a sustainable funding source. Regarding the proposed rezoning and development of Fortuna Villa in Greater Bendigo; six submissions were received about the rezoning proposal: four in support, and two objections. One objection was later withdrawn, leaving one outstanding objection. The owner, Paul Banks, has proposed future outdoor concerts and other developments at the historic Fortuna Villa site. Main concerns include noise from events, potential residential development, traffic impacts, and protection of heritage values. Six residents signed one of the submissions highlighting these issues. The City of Greater Bendigo notes that development restrictions and impact assessment reports will ensure each development is considered individually. Any outdoor events must comply with the council's planning scheme and Environment Protection Authority requirements. In contemporary times, Freedom of Entry is a formal honor bestowed by local governments on military units, allowing them to march through the streets with swords drawn, drums beating, and colors flying. This event typically includes a ceremonial parade, where the unit is challenged by local authorities, symbolizing the community's recognition of the military's service and commitment. The granting of Freedom of Entry represents the highest civic honor a city can confer on a military unit. It strengthens the bond between the military and the local community, acknowledging the unit's historical ties and contributions. Events celebrating Freedom of Entry often draw large crowds, showcasing community support for the armed forces. Prior to the election of female Councillor's and Mayors, the Mayoress role as wife of the Mayor, was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoress's played an important role in civic life through charity work, even stepping in on occasions to undertake Mayoral duties. Theodolites are a highly accurate instrument that measures angles between designated visible points in the horizontal and vertical planes. The theodolite has a long history, with the term first found in 1571 in a surveying textbook 'A geometric practice named Pantometria' by Leonard Digges. (source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodolite). Cooke Troughton & Simms began when John Troughton starting selling products in Fleet Street, London in 1782. He went into partnership with his brother Edward in 1807 who expanded the business considerably. William Simms, a former apprentice with the company was taken as a partner and then manager after Edward died in 1835 and the company became Troughton & Simms. By 1887 the company was able to produce all the parts necessary for their instruments and the company employed nearly 200 people and was one of the most well respected firms of instrument makers of the 1800's. James Simms, son of William who had inherited the company died in 1915 and the company was turned into a limited liability company by his two sons William and James. Things however were not so easy for the two sons and in 1922 the business was brought out by their rival T. Cooke & Sons becoming Cooke, Troughton & Simms. Theodolites are used by surveyors as part of their everyday work and although there is no specific information regarding the provenance of this particular one it is assumed it was used locally by the City of Bendigo and / or the Lands Department.A grey theodolite no 39161 made by Cooke, Thoughton & Simms. Eugene Carl Sandner was born in Bendigo in 1906. He was associated with the Bendigo and Northern District Base Hospital from 1935 – 1983 including Acting City Medical Officer in 1942 and serving as Medical Officer for 48 years. He was President of the Committee of Management from 1979- 1981. Dr Sandner retired from full time practice as a surgeon in 1971 and was first elected to council in August 1976 and elected Mayor of Bendigo for the 1978 – 79 term. The 'New' City of Bendigo baths also known as 'The Baths' were opened on 26th February,1913 at a cost of £2000. These baths made use of an existing dam and had men only and ladies bathing areas as well as a 'paddling paddock' for young children. This set of plans is for the Men's Bathing shed which serviced the men's bathing area adjacent to the still existing tennis courts on Barnard Street. In 1958 the Municipal Baths were replaced by an Olympic Pool and £17,000 was raised by public subscription towards this pool’s construction. Bendigo Art Gallery was founded in 1887. Typed and signed letter from Gordon Thomson, Deputy Director of the NGV addressed to Mr W. B. Bolton at Bendigo Art Gallery. Letter is on National Gallery of Victoria letterhead requesting photographs and information about the gallery on behalf of UNESCO for publication in the International journal 'Museum'. Assay is a process of metallurgy and chemical analysis used to determine proportions of precious metals in ores and other metallurgy substances such as silver or gold. The process helps identify pollutants present within a sample and can indicate a high level of pollution in a mining site. Stoneware crucibles are used in the fire assay process due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Fire assay is a three step process where by samples from the mine are ground in a find powder and then mixed with dry powder chemicals. This mixture is heated in a crucible to extreme temperatures (crucible fusion) until all of the powers fuse into a glass like slag. Once this reaction is complete, the contents are poured into a mold and cooled. In step three (known as cupellation) the mixture is separated in a fire assay cupel and once this is complete the cupel with reveal a small bead of precious metals. Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running potteries in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. It has partnered with the City on various tourism promotions and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection.Two stoneware vessels of differing dimensions (0287.1 & .2). After the closure of the Bendigo Post Office in Pall Mall in 1997, the ground and lower floors of the building were transformed into a tourism and interpretation centre. The Bendigo Visitor Information Centre is staffed partly by volunteers and these pins are presented as a sign of gratitude from the City of Greater Bendigo for there services.Three metal pins, two silver, one gold, attached to printed card. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. Ted Rankins was the last Post Master at the Bendigo Post Office and a long term telegraph volunteer post his retirement. Now a Visitor Centre, dedicated volunteers at the Post Office continued to demonstrate and educate the public about the daily workings of the Post Office up until 2019 when Covid 19 disrupted every day life. This sign was issued to Ted during his time working at the Post Office and is part of the postal collection donated by the Rankins family in memory of Ted. Yellow plastic desk plate.
