Gunter's chain (also known as Gunter’s measurement) is a distance measuring device used for surveying. It was designed and introduced in 1620 by English clergyman and mathematician Edmund Gunter (1581–1626). It enabled plots of land to be accurately surveyed and plotted, for legal and commercial purposes. The provenance of this particular Gunter Chain is unknown but it is believed to be used either by the City of Bendigo / Sandhurst or the Lands Department locally when measuring and laying out plots and streets locally. A 66-foot (20.1 m) chain divided into 100 links, marked off into groups of 10 by brass rings or tags. Each link is 7.92 inches (201 mm) long. A quarter chain, or 25 links, measures 16 feet 6 inches (5.03 m) also called a a rod (or pole) measure. Ten chains measure a furlong and 80 chains measure a statute mile. city of greater bendigo surveying

Freedom of Entry is a ceremonial privilege granted to military units, allowing them to march through a city or town with full military honors, symbolizing trust and community ties. Freedom of Entry has its roots in military traditions dating back to ancient Rome, where soldiers were not allowed to enter the city without permission due to concerns about maintaining order. This practice evolved over centuries, particularly after the English Civil War, when loyal military units were granted the right to enter cities as a mark of honor and trust. In contemporary times, Freedom of Entry is a formal honor bestowed by local governments on military units, allowing them to march through the streets with swords drawn, drums beating, and colors flying. This event typically includes a ceremonial parade, where the unit is challenged by local authorities, symbolizing the community's recognition of the military's service and commitment. The granting of Freedom of Entry represents the highest civic honor a city can confer on a military unit. It strengthens the bond between the military and the local community, acknowledging the unit's historical ties and contributions. Events celebrating Freedom of Entry often draw large crowds, showcasing community support for the armed forces. The Certificate of Freedom of Entry to Bendigo was granted to A.H.Q Survey Regt in 1970. Signed by JCH Jeffrey, Mayor. This was a great honor to be granted to the unit and this booklet records the exercising of that privilege on 26 October 1990. Eaglehawk is a hilly district, eight kilometres beyond central Bendigo, with many quartz lodes. The origin of its name is uncertain. It may have been named by a shepherd who killed an eaglehawk which attacked sheep, or by an early goldminer who observed an eaglehawk. Gold was discovered at Bendigo (Sandhurst) in October, 1851, and the gold-bearing land extended several kilometres north-west of Bendigo beyond Eaglehawk. One well-known goldfield was Eaglehawk Gully, dating from 1852. The community at Eaglehawk soon began to develop. On 29 July 1862 the Borough of Eaglehawk formed and in 1865 a Town Hall opened. By 1871 the population of Eaglehawk was 6,590. In 1887, when George Willan was Mayor, the Borough issued medals for Queen Victoria's jubilee (NU 20204-5 ), and in 1897, when E.C. Brown was Mayor, it again issued medals for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee (NU 20453). The same year moves began to build a new Town Hall, but it took until 1901 for funds to be raised and construction to be completed. Further growth occurred in both the community and social institutions, and by 1903 the the population was 8,130. By then Eaglehawk was connected to Bendigo by steam tramway, and boasted post and money order facilities, three banks and a telegraph office. It had 'numerous hotels', three state schools, two private schools, nine churches, a court of petty sessions, a police station, two mechanics institutes, several organised societies and a park 'hansomely laid out with flower beds and shrubs'. The 'model borough' had 1,862 houses, and streets lit partly with gas and partly with kerosene. By 1947 the decline in gold mining had caused the population to fall to 4,090. Bendigo became more dominant as an employment centre. However, Eaglehawk still had nine hotels and as well had acquired an electric tram and public baths. The population reached its turn-of-the-century level again in 1991. On 7 April 1994, the Borough of Eaglehawk was united with the City of Bendigo, the Shires of Huntly and Strathfieldsaye, and the Borough of Eaglehawk, parts of the Rural City of Marong, the Shires of McIvor and Metcalf to form the City of Greater Bendigo. By then the borough had become physically joined with suburban Bendigo. Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. The aim of The Bendigo Easter Festival is to increase awareness of, and attendance at the Bendigo Easter Festival amongst regional, intrastate, and interstate audiences by 2006. Bendigo Easter Festival - Australia's oldest festival ... .... .. Gold, gold, gold. The year of 1871 was a great year for Bendigo. Parks were laid out, trees lined the streets. Although acknowledged as starting in 1869 the Easter Festival was considered an annual event by 1871. Under brilliant illumination the whole of the Camp Reserve (now Rosalind Park) was filled with a bewildering variety of groups, exhibits and individuals all eager to be involved in such a worthwhile cause. There were sports meetings, theatricals, bazaars and instrumental items as well as dancing and carnival rides. On Easter Monday, as it is today, there was a grand procession that included a variety of bands. 1871 also marked the first year that the Chinese joined in the festivities. Originally the Chinese participated in the procession by dressing in richly embroidered costumes, and carrying colourful banners in all shapes and sizes, which were specially made for them in China. In 1889, the Chinese were given their traditional place in the Parade, the end. They created a wonderful spectacle with their colourful costumes, banners and flags, and in 1892, Loong, the dragon appeared. The Bendigo Easter Festival had been fortunate in that it bad such a lively Chinese community in its midst. At the time of course, Bendigo was known as Sandhurst, and it was not until twenty years after the first Easter Festival that the town was known as Bendigo. These days with sponsorship from the Sandburst Trustees, the Festival is known as the Sandhurst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival. 132 years later, the Sandburst Trustees Bendigo Easter Festival has had many changes. But loyal followers have never been disappointed. This year people saw the traditions upheld with family entertainments and not Loong, but Sun Loong, meaning new dragon, a 100m long Imperial Dragon who was created to take the place of the aging Loong. Valerie Lovejoy is writing a comprehensive history of the Army Survey Regiment as part of her Master's degree at La Trobe University. The project was initiated with support from the Ex-Fortuna Survey Association. The Bendigo community has contributed about $19,000 towards the writing and publishing of the book. Additional funding came from a scholarship, a $3,000 community grant from the City of Greater Bendigo, and support from the Army's Officer's, Sergeant's, and Soldier's messes. Lovejoy conducted over 80 interviews and distributed questionnaires to former regiment members.Interviewees expressed enthusiasm and pride in their work and the friendships formed during their service. The Army Survey Regiment, based at Fortuna in Bendigo since June 11, 1942, was the largest unit in the surveying corps. The regiment played a significant role in the development of Bendigo and Australia, particularly through mapping efforts. The writing of the book is being officially launched by the Mayor of Greater Bendigo at Fortuna. The book is expected to be completed by March 1999.Fortuna Restoration Article - "Gold and Governors" - Bendigo Advertiser Sat 05 July 1997- Author Susan Turpie This item contains the following: 11217.4a Colour Photo of author Valerie Lovejoy, centre, with Gary Wamest from the Ex-Fortuna Survey Association and City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Barry Ackerman on a verandah at the steps of the grand old mansion. 11217.4b Part of page 2 - Story Mapped Out - Book Writes new chapter in Hisotrynon-fictionbendigo, fortuna, army tropographic support establishment, valerie lovejoy, barry ackerman

Theodolites are a highly accurate instrument that measures angles between designated visible points in the horizontal and vertical planes. The theodolite has a long history, with the term first found in 1571 in a surveying textbook 'A geometric practice named Pantometria' by Leonard Digges. (source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodolite). Cooke Troughton & Simms began when John Troughton starting selling products in Fleet Street, London in 1782. He went into partnership with his brother Edward in 1807 who expanded the business considerably. William Simms, a former apprentice with the company was taken as a partner and then manager after Edward died in 1835 and the company became Troughton & Simms. By 1887 the company was able to produce all the parts necessary for their instruments and the company employed nearly 200 people and was one of the most well respected firms of instrument makers of the 1800's. James Simms, son of William who had inherited the company died in 1915 and the company was turned into a limited liability company by his two sons William and James. Things however were not so easy for the two sons and in 1922 the business was brought out by their rival T. Cooke & Sons becoming Cooke, Troughton & Simms. Theodolites are used by surveyors as part of their everyday work and although there is no specific information regarding the provenance of this particular one it is assumed it was used locally by the City of Bendigo and / or the Lands Department.A grey theodolite no 39161 made by Cooke, Thoughton & Simms.
