One of the City of Sunshine Library was its distinctive community service was its mobile library service, remembered locally as a symbol of community outreach and literacy support. The service was launch in 1978. The Millennium Man was a large metal sculpture commissioned by Village Cinemas Sunshine in the 1990s. Created by BIGFish in Footscray, he was designed as a playful, larger‑than‑life movie mascot. He was a muscular figure holding a globe wrapped in a strip of film, symbolising movies around the world The sculpture and was built from metal, with a bold, comic‑book aesthetic and was only intended originally to last only five years, but he became a local icon instead. The Sunshine Marketplace redevelopment in 2016 included a significant refurbishment of Millennium Man but by 2020, he had deteriorated badly with rust and structural issues, and the fact that people loved climbing on him made him a public liability. The Millennium Man was removed sometime after 2020 and has not returned to the site. The wooden buildings of Sunshine Railway Station were demolished as part of the Region Railway Line works that created additional and longer platforms, pedestrian overpass with lifts for disability access. The City of Brimbank Sunshine Branch Library and Customer Service Centre was built on the former H.V. McKay Massey Ferguson Site. John McLeod Pavilion located on John Mcleod Reserve was the former club rooms of the Deer Park Football and Cricket Clubs. For many years these rooms were used by the clubs as change rooms for training, competition, and social functions. The rooms were also available for the general public to hire out for functions such as birthdays, engagements, etc. Due the condition of the building, the City of Brimbank made a decision late in 2025 to demolish the building in February 2026. The two storey The Hunt Club Hotel was built in 1886, replacing a much earlier single storey hotel from the 1850's, that burnt down the same year. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the historic Hunt Club Hotel and surrounding land from ICI. Council ward voting in Victoria is shaped by how each local council is divided into wards and the voting system used to elect councillors. The essentials are how wards are structured, how votes are cast and counted. Over the years council ward boundaries are changed, added and deleted to suit the changing demographics and numbers of local residents. The most recent change for the City of Brimbank and many other councils in Victoria was when in 2024, single‑member wards were introduced, that is, one councillor represents each ward. Voters then elect one candidate using the full preferential voting system.The Voters Rolls provides a 1979 to 1980 historical snapshot of the names and addresses of property owners in the former City of Sunshine.Particulars on the Roll are in the following order: - Property Assessment Number, Roll Number, Surname, Christian Names, Voter's Address, Owner Type, Situation or other description of rateable property. This building once contained the municipal offices and a public Town Hall for the City of Sunshine. The building was demolished and on the site the R.T. Pollard Gardens were established. The Gardens are shown in the second photograph.Although the council built new municipal offices in Alexandra Ave, a Town Hall for public use was never rebuilt. The council considered that there were other halls available, such as the Mariana Hall or school halls, which could be hired for public or council functions. This picture of the Sunshine Town Hall is a copy made from an unknown printed article. From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed.The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. In the Sunshine Advocate of 21/03/1925 it is reported that Wunderlich Ltd decided to establish works in Sunshine for the manufacture of terra cotta and faience for the facing of city buildings. The product was intended to imitate granite, which would give a brighter appearance to concrete walls. A stone surface finish to the terra cotta could be achieved by applying a variety of colour combinations of glazes with a special 'spackle' gun. A building that is still standing and has the imitation granite finish terra cotta is the Nicholas Building at 21 - 47 Swanston Street, Melbourne. The Nicholas Building was designed by Harry Norris for Alfred Nicholas (Aspro fame), and was built during 1925 - 1926. The building is classified by the National Trust (B4079) and has the Victorian Heritage Register (H2119). During my employment in the factory from 1964 to 1969 the tiles were generally faced with single colour glazes. For some small jobs a light coloured mottled finish was achieved by spattering a white glaze over a cream coloured background or vice versa. There were no imitation granite jobs done, probably because of changing attitudes to the intended appearance of buildings. The green coloured tile in our collection is an unfinished (untrimmed) retain tile typical of the green coloured tiles that were made for the two stages of the Commonwealth Centre Building (colloquially known as the Green Latrine), that was once located on the corner of Spring and Victoria Streets in Melbourne. Similar coloured tiles were also used on some shop fronts. The Commonwealth Centre Building no longer exists, however the Century Building at 125 - 133 Swanston Street, Melbourne is covered with single coloured tiles (white). The Century Building was built in 1939, with the architect being Marcus Barlow. The Building is classified by the National Trust (B4045). Our tile along with several others were headed for dumping among the asbestos waste at the rear of the two Wunderlich factories (Circa 1968). With permission from the Factory Superintendent of the Terra Cotta factory they were saved and taken home. Several are still in use as pavers around a barbecue in Melton from where our tile was obtained. It should be noted that the Wunderlich Architectural Terra Cotta factory in Sunshine did not manufacture terra cotta roofing tiles, as reported in the Brimbank City Council Post-contact Heritage Study HO 073 former Wunderlich now West End Market. Wunderlich terra cotta roofing tiles were manufactured at their factory in Mitcham Road, Vermont. Document HO 073 contains at least 3 errors. This tile is an example of the type of facing that was applied to city buildings for over 40 years from the mid 1920's. As building techniques changed the need for this type of facing diminished, and so the factory was eventually sold and demolished. A free standing tall chimney stack which serviced two of the kilns was a significant feature of the North Sunshine skyline. A part of the history of Sunshine disappeared with the demolition of the factory and the chimney stack. Only the façade of the finishing section of the factory where tiles were trimmed and stored remains. Cr. Albert George Pennell served as Shire President of Braybrook in 1946. He was elected at a council meeting that year and represented the Western Riding of the shire. His tenure is part of the broader civic history of Braybrook, which later became part of the City of Sunshine and, following council amalgamations in 1995, the City of Maribyrnong. This silver cup was presented to the Shire of Braybrook by Cr. Albert George Pennell and his wife to commemorate their visit to the Borough of Maidstone, Kent September 1950. Pennell Reserve - Originally known as the Braybrook Reserve and it was renamed to Pennell Reserve in 1951. The reserve was going to be named as the "Albert Pennell Reserve" after a Shire of Braybrook Councillor. The name was shortened to just Pennell Reserve to recognize the contribution that the Pennell family has made to the district. Bone Dust & Tallow Manufacturer and Braybrook resident Cr. George William Pennell. He was the Braybrook Shire President for eight terms 1917-1918, 1919-1920,1923-1924, 1926-1927, 1931-1932, 1932-1933, 1942-1943 & 1946-1947. Brimbank Little Athletics Centre is one of Victoria's Little Athletics registered clubs. These clubs offer track and field programs for children aged 5–17, promoting fitness, fun, and personal achievement. The three colours represents the colours of the three individual centres that were merged in 2000, Deer Park (Yellow), Red (St. Albans) & Blue (Sunshine) to form the Brimbank Little Athletics Centre. The yellow wheat graphic represents the area’s history of agriculture manufacture and the flat grassy landscape of the western plains, and is an adoption from the City of Brimbank's logo. On the back, the 151, means the centre is the 151th registered Little Athletics Centre in Victoria.
