... Upper Beaconsfield Victoria Australia...Cockatoo... Cockatoo Victoria Australia cross deceased persons natural disasters ash wednesday bushfire education centre paul reid Cardinia Shire Council Black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper. ...The cross depicted in the photograph is stated to be from the Uniting Church in Upper Beaconsfield in the Museum's registration records but may instead be from St John's Anglican Church which burned down in the Ash Wednesday bushfires as no Uniting Church site is recorded in Upper Beaconsfield. Forty-seven people were killed in the Ash Wednesday fires in Victoria, including twenty-seven from the Cardinia Shire area. Twenty-one of the people killed were located in Upper Beaconsfield; twelve of the people killed in the area were fire-fighters, along with nine residents. 186 homes and countless livestock were also lost in the fires which ranged through Victoria and into South Australia due to a combination of dry, hot and windy weather. The date of the fires corresponds with the the date of the Christian religious festival of the same name that year. St John's Anglican Church was rebuilt on the same site within the next three years. The design, by local architect Paul Reid, combined elements of the previous building with the style of village churches Reid had observed in Austria and Bavaria after his graduation from Melbourne University. The cross, which buckled in the heat generated by the fires, is believed to be on display at the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre in Cockatoo, which was itself constructed as a memorial on the site of a kindergarten in which 300 Cockatoo residents sheltered from the fire. The specific occasion on which this photograph was taken is not known. This item is significant because of its association with the Ash Wednesday bushfires, one of the worst natural disasters in Victoria's history. The Ash Wednesday fires occurred on 16th February 1983. Twenty-seven people from the Cardinia Shire area were killed in the fires, including twenty-one who died within a kilometre of the church in which the cross depicted resided.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper. The photograph depicts a plain dark-coloured metal cross on a stand. The cross has buckled forwards. The item is resting on a table covered with a pale-coloured table-cloth. A bouquet of flowers is visible to the left-hand side of the image. Chairs and three women in special occasion-style clothing are visible at the rear of the image. The cross featured in the photograph is from a church in Upper Beaconsfield which was damaged in the Ash Wednesday bushfires in February 1983. Emerald Museum & Nobelius Heritage ParkPhotograph - Nobelius Employee's Picnic, 1909
... Cockatoo, Victoria, Australia ...This photograph depicts employees of C. A. Nobelius on a fruit growers employee picnic. It is disputed where this photograph was taken - while we have suggested it was in the Cockatoo Creek area (now simply Cockatoo), the State Library's catalogue entry for another copy of this photograph suggests it was likely the Dandenong Ranges based on the Sassafras-Olinda label on one of the carts. Another post specifically labels it as the corner of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and Monbulk Road, though I don't believe we have enough information to affirm this. This image recalls the workplace recreational events of the area in the early 20th century, and has direct relevance to the Nobelius Nursery.A black and white copy of a photograph of several horse-drawn carts on a road, filled with at least thirty people - men and women - dressed in the styles of the early 20th century. There are trees and buildings in the background, and some of the picnickers are posing for the photograph.Top-left of photograph: "1909"cockatoo, 1900s, nobelius nursery -

Emerald Museum & Nobelius Heritage ParkPhotograph - Mountain District Community Health Service and Cockatoo Instant Welfare Centre 1960s, c. 1964
... McBride Street, Cockatoo, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ...The Mountain District Community Health Service (MDCHS) was conceived of by Cockatoo local Myrtle Quicke, a well-renowned medical professional and nurse in the early-mid 1900s, as well as a founder of the Australian College of Nursing. After moving to Cockatoo in 1954, she quickly realised the shortage of adequate medical care in the area and organised the establishment of the MDCHS. This involved fundraisers and meetings with both locals and council officials to drum up funding and support against opposition who believed there was no need for such a centre. For many years, money was raised for the MDCHS by an opportunity shop nearby until the centre opened on the 3rd of March, 1964. It operated on a membership service, costing £1/5 a year for a single man or woman with no dependents, and a nurse was in attendance 24-hours a day. Alongside the development of the MDCHS, the Berwick Shire council (now part of Cardinia Shire) decided to assign an Infant Welfare Nurse to Cockatoo in order to assist with an influx of new babies in the area. An Infant Welfare Centre was attached to the MDCHS, and opened at the same time. Myrtle joked that she would have the Queen open the building, but it was instead opened by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe. The day was one of great celebration for all in the town. This photograph documents the growth of local healthcare and medicine, as well as one of the many accomplishments of Myrtle Quicke.A black and white photograph of the front of a brick building. The building is enclosed by a low metal fence and two open gates, and sits on an unsealed road. Behind the building are a number of tall trees. On the reverse of the photograph is a handwritten pencil caption. In photograph, on freestanding sign: "MOUNTAIN DISTRICT COMMUNITY / HEALTH SERVICE" In photograph, on sign on brick wall: "COCKATOO / INFANT WELFARE / CENTRE" Reverse, handwritten in pencil: "'MOUNTAIN DISTRICT COMMUNITY / HEALTH SERVICE' / AND / 'COCKATOO INFANT WELFARE CENTRE 1960's'"cockatoo, 1960s, medical & health -

... Cockatoo is often described as a rasping screech which resembles the sound of a rusty hinge being moved. This type of call is made when the bird is in flight. These birds also fond of attention and can pick their own feathers if they are bored. The name "gang gang" derives from a New South Wales Aboriginal language, either the Ngunnawal or Wiradjuri. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria...Cockatoo is often described as a rasping screech which resembles the sound of a rusty hinge being moved. This type of call is made when the bird is in flight. They reside in mountainous forests and open woodlands, often in small groups or larger flocks at sources of food and water. They eat mainly seeds from native trees and shrubs along with wattles, eucalypts and hawthorns. The Gang-gang Cockatoo is also known to incorporate berries, nuts, fruits and insects to their diet. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. The male Gang Gang Cockatoo is standing stylised on a wooden perch. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This female Gang-gang Cockatoo has a grey head and crest with brown glass eyes. The beak is hooked and a pale bone colour. The neck and torso of the cockatoo is patterned with orange and black stripes.
