Envelope used for letter to Mr James Henderson, Learmouth Mill, Coldstream, Northumberland, England. 1861 Document ...This envelope was used to post a letter or other similar document from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria around November 1861 to a Mr James Henderson in Coldstream, Northumberland, England. The contents inside the envelope have been lost and the sender of the envelope is not known. Postal services in Bacchus Marsh can be traced back to at least 1847 when Henry James of Bacchus Marsh was appointed postmaster for Bacchus Marsh replacing the service previously conducted from Ballan. Henry James conducted this postal service from his residence. This service was still designated as the Ballan Post Office until September 1850 when its name was formally changed to the Bacchus Marsh Post Office. The envelope of 1861 addressed to Mr Henderson in England is therefore a fairly early documentary artifact from users of the Bacchus Marsh postal service. An envelope used for a letter in 1861. An address in Norththumberland, England is written on the front of the envelope. It also shows a postage stamp depicting Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The postage stamp is a sixpence stamp produced in the colony of Victoria in the 1850s and 1860s. On the reverse of the envelope are 3 circular shaped post office marks: 'Bacchus Marsh Victoria No.25 1861'; 'Melbourne 1 Z No.25 61'; and 'Coldstream JA22 62'.envelopes, postal services, bacchus marsh post office -

... Jack and Marion Newman ran the store from the mid sixties till around 1970 as I remember, but Robert (Rob) their son lives in Coldstream and he may recall the exact time his parents operated the store. ...Jack and Marion Newman ran the store from the mid sixties till around 1970 as I remember, but Robert (Rob) their son lives in Coldstream and he may recall the exact time his parents operated the store. ...As discussed, please find attached photos of the "Milk Bar" and Post Office near the NE corner of Jumping Creek Rd and Yarra Rd, Wonga Park. Previously I was under the impression, it was a bit of a general store, but perhaps that was not the case. Jack and Marion Newman ran the store from the mid sixties till around 1970 as I remember, but Robert (Rob) their son lives in Coldstream and he may recall the exact time his parents operated the store. The photos taken appear to be about "1970" vintage and were taken perhaps when they left. In regard to the other photo that I was trying to locate and find out about the function. The photo itself is entitled "Farewell to Mr and Mrs Bridger" and as you can see there were many people in attendance. In regard to the date of the photo I suspected it was taken circa 1916-1918 as my great great grandfather John Thomas Allen Snr (1841-1918) is in the photo and my paternal grandmother Rose Allen (1906-1989) is also in the photo and appears to be about 8-10 years old. In addition Rose's older sisters Ruby V.E. Allen (1904-1987) and Pearl C. Allen (1900-1990) and they appear to be in mid to late teens. So this makes me reasonable confident about the timing of the photograph. The photograph also includes Mars Buckley (Buckley and Nunn) and ?Marie Pinkerton (Haberdashery store in Croydon) who were friends of the Allen Family.
