The Russell Collins Restaurant was located in the basement of the T&G Building on the south west corner of the Collins and Russell Streets intersection. It was a popular 'up-market' restaurant from the 1940s until the early 1970s when the T&G building underwent alterations. The restaurant, like its counterpart Elizabeth Collins, was renowned for its large platters of delicious salads. Nick (Naki) Raftopoulos operated the Russell Collins during the early 70s up until its closure.A black and white photograph of the interior of an Art Deco style restaurant fitted out around the walls with wooden 'shoulder high' cubicles which seated four people. Tables and chairs with various settings are arranged in the open areas of the restaurant. The floor is a wooden herringbone parquetry with a carpet on the floor in the reception area. Collection of thirty-nine postcards donated by Jillian Rigby which had been owned by her grandparents, George and Edith Weir, who from c.1917 lived at 84 Princess Street, Kew. The mostly 'mint' postcards were purchased in Victoria and while travelling overseas. The sole dated postcard is dated from 1929. The postcards are numbered sequentially from 2017.0058.01-39. The remainder of the collection donated by Jill Rigby which was once owned by the Weirs of Broken Hill and Kew consist of costumes, costume accessories, photographs, and documents.The postcards in the Weir collection, especially those purchased on a trip or trips to the mother country, i.e. United Kingdom, represent a representative sample of sites that were considered significant to those Australians undertaking a reverse grand tour by member of the erstwhile colonies. As a young man, Collins joined the Fenian movement (founded to overthrow British rule in Ireland). This work led him into politics. He was quickly elected a state representative and then a state senator. As a legislator, Collins worked to ease restrictions on the practice of religion for Catholics in state institutions and to earn public money for Catholic charitable institutions. With the rapidly increasing number of Irish voters in Boston in the 1870s, their vocal assertion of their rights, and strong political organization, the Irish were beginning to be recognized as a power to be reckoned with. MEDIUM: Photographic print. DESCRIPTION: A photograph of abstract architecture. Black outer frame with glass front panel and white board inner frame. An abstract collection of building faces meeting towards a left off centre vertical line collision point. This picture is a meeting of mirrors, how many remains a mystery. Where one mirror or building starts and another ends, to the viewers eye is met with some uncertainty. Following lines, the clearest meeting of mirrors is where the building on the left appears to be the same and collides with a variety of other buildings coming horizontally in a distinct vertical line to the top of the image. The bulidings on the right have somehow through the skill of the photographer captured a bermuda triangle of walls. The mirroring angles of the walls being from either several different buildings, or from several different mirrors. This creates a strange collecetion of imagery, the viewer unable to make clear distinctions of where something starts or ends or from where it is coming from. The tonal shades and shadows created also play a role in creating an interesting collage of shapes and lines. This piece essentially speaks of lines, angles, geometric shapes, meeting points, shadow and light.
