Article on Ivy Clyne [likely Agnes Ivy Clyne (neé Benson)], seeing Halley's comet for the second time after seeing the comet seventy-six years ago. This letter was sent by air mail from Singapore to the UK. It finally arrived after being salvaged from the wreckage of the Comet G-ALYV which crashed just outside Calcutta on May 2, 1953. See report in Media

In 1824, Hume and Hovell were the first Europeans to pass through the district and graziers soon followed, impressed by the abundance of fodder and water. The first cattle run in the area was settled in about 1838 in what was known as Swampy Plains. Later, this run became known as “Khancoban Station”. Khancoban lies in the heart of the high country and is home of Australia’s mountain cattlemen. This heritage is celebrated in Banjo Paterson’s epic poem, “The Man from Snowy River”. In 1962, Bruce and Jo Chisholm relocated from Bond Springs to Khancoban Station, which Bruce had acquired in 1959. Khancoban Hereford and thoroughbred stud progeny were keenly sought after whenever they were presented in the sale ring. Bruce imported a stallion, Comet, from England in 1964. Comet stood at Khancoban for 15 years and was the sire of numerous winners, including Cobbermine, Kelly's Eye, Boack and Starglow. Photographs demonstrate local Kiewa Valley residents enjoying a community visit to the historic homestead at Khancoban Station which holds significance to the early history of the area. Its heritage is celebrated in Banjo Paterson’s epic poem, “The Man from Snowy River”. This bike belonged to Wally Paten who worked in the Orbost Butter Factory in the 1940's. Wally's father, Thomas Paten came to Orbost in 1893 and began growing fancy seeds in 1907 for H. James. He built the first levee bank in Orbost (ref. Mary Gilbert). The Comet bike was distributed by the Myer Emporium. "Comet:" was their house brand. They also sold the "Peter Pan". It was named "The Comet" probably because it was a fast bike. At the time it was an expensive bike . Ted Waterford made headlines riding Melbourne to Adelaide one way then return on a Comet in 1932.Bicycles have been a part of Australian life for more than 140 years. The bicycle soon began competing with the horse as a convenient and economical way for people to get around. This bicycle is an example of an early style which was used by an Orbost local.A man's road bicycle. It has 26inch wheels, back pedal brakes and has a wire basket attached to the curved handle bars. There is a leather seat in poor condition. The back wheel has a mudguard painted white. The bike is ungeared. This is probably the original frame with newer wheels. The P.S. Comet was launched in 1812. Working originally on the River Clyde in Scotland, it was widely recognised as Europe's first commercially successful steamboat service.In 1972 the National Bank used this illustration of Sandridge from Railway Pier, Williamstown, as the illustration for their November 1972 Calendar. It was taken from a work by the colonial artist S.T. GILL and shows the many sailing ships moored of Sandridge Beach as well as the steam vessel 'Comet'. The Herbel Comet Mine and the New Golden Fleece Gold Mine were situated in the Diamond Hill area. In 1912, (19th September) the 'Bendigo Advertiser' reported that Mr. Rankin had an option to purchase the Herbel Comet mine, which adjoined the New Golden Fleece Mine on the south side. The mine had a 'handy winding plant and a ten head battery'. See report by W.H.
