The Melbourne Cup Carnival covers four days of racing and includes the Melbourne Cup, Derby Day, Oaks Day and the Champion Stakes. The four day carnival began in 1869. The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861, and Derby day in 1856. In 1899 the winner of the Melbourne Cup was Merriwee who also won the Derby that year. At that time the Champions Stakes was called the Mackinnon Stakes, named after Lachlan Kenneth Scobie Mackinnon, a previous chairman of the Victorian Racing Club. In 1899 the race for age race was won by Mora. The Oaks is a race for 3yo fillies racing over one and a half miles in 1899 when it was won by Nitre.Large ledger book probably from Arthur Allsop. The Half Moon Caravan Park was located at 1–9 Millers Road, Brooklyn, on the corner of Somerville Road. It was established in the 1960s, according to commercial property records but another source states the caravan park was built in 1956, which likely reflects the earliest development of the site before it became widely known as Half Moon. The caravan park closed prior to 2010, when the site was sold and later cleared. When it closed, 73 residents were rehoused through a coordinated effort by Hobsons Bay Council and community agencies. This Bible was owned by Janet Hose (nee Murfitt) 1856-1947. She was married to George Hose and they lived in Warrnambool for all of their married life. They had eleven children and all the births and some of the deaths of the children are recorded in this little Bible. The book was purchased from James Hider who had been a carpenter, a land agent and a rate collector before he established a bookstore in Timor Street in the 1860s. He was heavily involved in community affairs, being a local Councillor and Mayor in 1868-9. He was also an early commercial photographer in Warrnambool. This small Bible is of great interest because of its connection to the Hose family in Warrnambool. In the book are recorded the births and deaths of members of the Hose family. It was a common custom in the 19th century to include family history details in family Bibles and some larger-style Bibles had pages specifically printed to include family history material. This Bible is also of antiquarian interest, an attractive item with its leather cover and gold clasp.This is a mottled brown leather-covered Bible of 840 pages. The pages are gilt-edged and there is a gold metal clasp to close over the pages. Inside the front and back pages there are signatures and other handwritten material, some written in black ink and some in pencil. There is also a label from the Warrnambool book shop and stationery store of James Hider. The inscription pages and the front cover are stained. The album is a collection of items of interest, mainly newspaper cuttings, from 1982, 1983 and 1984. The folder contains information and records relating to the Warrnambool Bird Observers' Group and includes records relating to Lake Pertobe, Tower Hill, The Maam, Kelly's Swamp, Nirranda, Allansford, Timboon, and Port Fairy. They were collected by Jill Heathcote (1927-2011), a Dennington resident who was for many years a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society, the Warrnambool Bird Observers' Group and the Warrnambool Field Naturalists Group. The cuttings and bird records reflect her interest in both local history and natural history. These two items are of considerable interest, particularly to those interested in local natural history. Warrnambool Football Club was formed in June 1861 making it one of the earliest clubs formed in Australia and many of the earliest players and associates were members also of the Warrnambool Cricket club which was established around 1854. Games of various sized teams were played in the early years and it was in 1889 that the Warrnambool and District Football Association was formed. The year marked with the celebration of this dinner, was important in the club’s history as it marked their entry into the wider Hampden football league, where it still plays to the present day. As the venue for this dinner, the Commercial Hotel on the corner of Liebig and Timor Sts, was commonly used in the early days as a club meeting place. The history of the club was recorded in “The Birth of the Blues” by Ron Cole, Harry Keilar, Ron McCorkell and Ian Wright, in 2007.The Warrnambool Football club is one of the longest surviving sporting clubs in the Warrnambool district and as such, would have involved or touched the lives of many of its residents. The Bright Council, now the Alpine Shire took over the control of the township in 1960. This relatively young town of Mount Beauty, along with the surrounding townships of Falls Creek, Bogong, Tawonga South and Tawonga, are all part of a prospering tourist area with excellent services, accommodation, food and a wide range of recreational activities available for all ages. On land previously used only for summer cattle grazing in the natural alpine grasslands, the first ski lodge was built in 1948 by workers from the hydro scheme as skiing was a popular recreation. Many of the hydro employees were of European background and had grown up enjoying skiing and snow sports in their homelands and were keen to continue to pursue their winter sports interests. The first lift, a rope tow, was built in 1951 and the first chairlift in Australia was constructed there in 1957. Two T-Bars were opened in 1961. In 1964, the Victorian Municipal Directory recorded that Falls Creek had 29 ski club lodges and 16 commercial lodges.Employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in the Kiewa River Valley were the earliest skiers on the Bogong High Plains and built one of the first ski lodges at Falls Creek. This relatively young town of Mount Beauty, along with the surrounding townships of Falls Creek, Bogong, Tawonga South and Tawonga, are all part of a prospering tourist area with excellent services, accommodation, food and a wide range of recreational activities available for all ages. Made from shellac in the 1940s until 1948, then made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Single is 45 rpm, 12 inch is 33 and a third rev per minute, (LP) is long playing = 'album'. Late 1950s introduction of stereo phonic sound on commercial discs. His Masters Voice (HMV) is a British Record Compamny created in 1901. In 1961 EMI converted the HMV label into an exclusive classical music label. HMV has a logo of a dog listening to music.The record collection is understood to have been held by a local school in the Kiewa Valley possibly Mt Beauty or Bogong primary schools.Flat black disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove starting at the outside edge. Made from shellac - rotational speed of 78 revs per minute, 33 and a third rpm (largest) or 45 rpm (smallest). The collection consists of about 50 records including children's and adult's some with cardboard covers. Many of the adult records have the HMV label.
