By 1983, the school had become a well-established institution, known for its inclusive environment and strong community ties. Sport and physical education were central to student life at Jacana Primary, with games like rounders offering opportunities for teamwork, physical development, and social interaction. Rounders, a bat-and-ball game with similarities to baseball, was a popular playground and inter-school sport during the 1980s, especially among primary-aged students. The 1983 Rounders group photograph captures the spirit of school sport during this era—highlighting the importance of participation, camaraderie, and school pride. It also reflects broader trends in 1980s school life, including uniforms, hairstyles, and recreational activities. As Jacana Primary has since closed, this image serves as a valuable record of the school’s vibrant sporting culture and its role in shaping the everyday experiences of students in Melbourne’s north. The 1983 Rounders group photograph from Jacana Primary School is a culturally and historically significant artefact that captures the spirit of student life and sport during a formative period in the school’s history. Taken in the early 1980s, the image reflects the importance of physical education and recreational activities in fostering teamwork, resilience, and social connection among students. The club itself notes that its first 25 years (1950–1975) are the least documented, though surviving photographs show active competition and club championships by the 1960s. The club has long operated from the St Albans Community Youth Club, 309A Main Road East — the same “Tin Shed” that has been central to youth sport and community activity since the 1950s. The club’s longevity makes it an important part of St Albans’ sporting heritage: It is one of the oldest martial arts institutions in the Brimbank area. Its connection to the Tin Shed links it to the broader history of youth sport, migration, and community building in St Albans. Its survival from the 1950s to today mirrors the suburb’s transformation from a semi‑rural outpost to a major multicultural centre.5880.01 - St. Albans Judo Club - Brothers Go For Gold.jpg Hamish and Clancy Freemantle 5880.02 - St. Albans Judo Club - St. Albans Pair Stars.jpg Wilby and Van Geli 5880.03 - St. Albans Judo Club - Champion Team.jpg Madeline Rooney, Sasha Sommeling, Liam San Jose, Tynneka Vangeli, Gina Vangeli, Bridget Sommeling 5880.04 - St. Albans Judo Club - Judo Gold.jpg Tynneka Vangeli, Clancy Freeman, Madeline Rooney 5880.05 - St. Albans Judo Club - Team Wins Judo Kudos.jpg Madeline Rooney, Sasha Sommeling, Liam San Jose, Tynneka Vangeli 5880.06 - St. Albans Judo Club - Judo 1994.jpg 5880.07 - St. Albans Judo Club - Judo At The Tin Shed.jpg 5880.08 - St. Albans Tin Shed - Tin Shed Judo.jpg 5880.09 - St. Albans Tin Shed - Tin Shed Judo.jpgst. albans judo club, st. albans tin shed, main road east, st. albans, st. albans community youth club -

He also founded the **Plumpton and Open Coursing Club**. * **Veterans:** He took a strong interest in the welfare of returned soldiers and donated **£100** toward the town's war memorial. * **Culture:** He was an active member of the **Mechanics Institute**. #### The Memorial Rotunda When Green passed away in 1923, a public fund was started to build a band rotunda for outdoor music recitals in his memory. The structure was designed and built by **Folliott Gilmore**, a local builder and timber merchant. It was officially dedicated by his friend **Frank Tate**, the Victorian Director of Education. #### Historical Celebrations The rotunda became a central point for major community events. During a "Back-to-School" celebration held during Show Week, the town was decorated with **12,000 handmade paper flowers** created by local women’s organisations. These flowers covered the rotunda, the bridge, and the town entrances. The event was a significant historical bridge for the town; it was attended by nine original students who had attended Charlton's first **"bark hut" school** in 1875, allowing them to see the modern developments Green had helped achieve. Blue soft covered, stapled booklet named 'Extra Muros', the magazine of the Ballarat Teachers College, ANZAC Day. The contents include: The Year's Sport ...Each year World War One and World War Two veteran, and Ballarat Teachers' College Principal addressed the College community for ANZAC Day. The following are excerpts of his 1947 address. "...But we should do more than remember, and instead of pausing once a year for this purpose is should be our aim to remember daily - every day should be an Anzac Day so that we shall be inspired to take stock of ourselves if we are tryig to be worthy of almidst 100,000 dead who died to keep this country free to progress nobly towards a worthy goal, What are we dong about it? As a body of teachers er should be particulalrly concerned, as in our hands largely the growth of the children lies. In the schools we can do much in our work of every day to develop right standards and a better outlook amongst the children it is our privilege to teach. We can successfully teach the three "R's" but if this is all we do then we have failed. Is should be our aim, living in the spirit of those who gace so much, to dedicate ourselfes to the work of teaching young people how to live; to train them gently in ethical standards of conduct; to take responsibility; to live through the operation with otherts; to be prepared to give service without thought of personal gain; to realise to the full all that is best in them for the good of all. What we should do and how it is to be done is difficult to descibe, but if we ourselves have taught something of the Anzac Sprit we shall not fail. In particular, we shold take care of the orphan and th child of the disabled soldier. We should explore all avenues to see what that these children get every opportunity for higher education. As far as it lies in our power we should see that these children do not suffer - thus the legacy of war is ours. In a few months you will be going out to your schools. You will have young children around you. Let you arims be high. Try to live worthily and let your little community be the better and the finer for your coming.
