They also produced tennis shoes and by 1932 Dunlop was manufacturing two million pairs a year. The Dunlop Maxply Tennis racquet was first produced in 1932 and dominated the wooden racquet market for the next 50 years. This racquet was made from a mix of nine different woods. The Maxply was favoured by legendary tennis players including Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Lew Hoad and Rod Laver who was using a Dunlop Maxply when he won all four Grand Slam tournaments in a row, something he achieved in 1962 and 1969. Sport activities including tennis have always been an important community pursuit in Wodonga and District. This racquet was used in competition at the Talgarno Tennis Club in the 1960s and 1970s.This item is significant because it represents a popular community activity and a successful manufacturer in Australia.A vintage wooden tennis racquet with a leather hand grip. Carl Dreverman & Co. was an Ironmongers in Nicholson Street, Orbost. Established in 1900 at first as Dreverman and Reynolds, Carl Dreverman took over the store which still exists today in Orbost as Orbost Hardware. The official Newmerella Football Club was probably started in 1913. Simon Gargan was the founder of the Newmerella Football Club.Prior to that teams played socially. This medal was presented to J.G.Ralston by the Orbost Cricket Club in 1929 for Fielding. John Gavin Ralston was born 26 July 1914 at Eden, N.S.W. and came to Orbost in the early 1920's, with his parents and siblings. They lived at the corner of Tennyson and Salisbury Streets. Jack was educated at Orbost Higher Elementary School before being apprenticed to William Ross at the Snowy River Mail as a lino-type operator. He married Jean Cameron. After WW11 when he served overseas in the islands) He resumed his trade at the Snowy River Mail until 1949 when began J.G.& J.M. Ralston, Seed & Produce Merchants. Jack Ralston was very involved in the Orbost sporting community, the Presbyterian Church and the Orbost Municipal Band. He also served in the Orbost sub-branch of the R.S.L. He died on April 15 1967. In the centre is an embossed picture of a batsman at the wicket. This is inside a circle. The bottom edge is decorated with leaves. The Orbost Bowling Club was founded in 1929, by a group of farmers and businessmen. They set about providing a sporting icon for the town. Six rinks were constructed on the current site using horse drawn scoops and drags. The "Back to Orbost” 1937 book, describes the greens as "a bit rough for the first two seasons but now compare favourably with most country greens". Funds for the construction were raised by the issue of debentures at £5 each, and subscriptions were £1/1s/0d ($2.10). ( info. Margaret Smith) Included in the photograph are: Wm Kerr; D. Smith, 20 Raymond Street, Orbost, 3888. Roma Smith (nee Cameron) was the daughter of Harry Purchase Cameron and Lilian Gladys (nee Harding. Roma married Ronald Richard SMITH in 1944 Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course. Like many others at the time, the Camerons bred race horses.Harry died in 1964 aged 75.Orbost Football Club through its many changes has always been an important social fabric of the Orbost community. This collection was compiled by Peter Fagg who worked as a scientist with the Department of Sustainability and Environment (now DELWP) to study dieback in eucalypts. He specialised in the silviculture of the eucalypt forest types of South-East Australia for most of his 40-year career, which started with the Forests Commission Victoria. He was in Orbost from 1968 - 1973. The contents of the book are all related to sporting groups in Orbost at the Mechanics Hall. Peter Fagg was the Publicity Officer for the group as well as president. He was also associated with the Orbost municipal bands.This item is related to Peter Fagg, a prominent member of the Orbost community. The town of Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley surrounded by farmland. It is adjacent to Mt Beauty (built from 1946), an SECV town built for the workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which was being constructed from 1911 to 1961. Tawonga consisted of essential amenities including a store, school, Butter factory, sporting facilities, post office, hall and hotel. Activities involved sport, social get togethers eg. dances, fund raising, CWA etc.The posters are a collection of historical photos, documentation and information regarding the history of the town of Tawonga, which is the centre of a farming community in the Kiewa Valley. The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Kiewa Valley Rifle Club belonged to the Australian Rifle Clubs. They were in the Military District No. 304 and operated as early as the 1920's. In 1876, an Australian Rifle Team, consisting of shooters from N.S.W. and Victoria was the first team ever to officially represent Australia in any sport in international competition. In 1885, the first civilian Rifle Club was formed. In 1921 they were reconstituted as a purely civilian organisation where they have remained ever since.This scoring book is evidence that the Kiewa Valley Rifle Club existed from the 1930's, enabling its members to participate in a sport that had 12232 members and 313 Rifle Clubs in Victoria by 1939.Hard covered dark brown book with very yellowed pages that have come away from the spine. It has 200 pages titled "Match Record" with only about the first 40 filled in in ink with names and scores.The entries date from 1932 to 1937Inside front cover "Members that paid for Bulls Eye Trophy" followed by a list of 13 - very faint.kiewa valley. rifle. club. community.
