Averys Ltd was the holding company for the 32 operating companies in the Avery Group. The Group's main activity was the design, manufacture, sale and servicing of a wide range of weighing machines, physical testing machines and fluid measuring equipment. The company's history can be traced back to 1730, with the manufacturing by hand of steelyards and beam scales in a small workshop in Birmingham. When legislation was introduced at the turn of the century requiring the stamping of all weighing machines used for trade Avery branches were set up in some 100 towns in the United Kingdom. This was the beginning of the sales and service organisation that expanded to cover not only every important town in the United Kingdom but was also established in many overseas countries. The item is a kerosene marine ships lamp used onboard ships and smaller vessels for general lighting and navigation the subject lamp was made by a very well known maker R C Murray of Glasgow Scotland. During the research several different addresses were found but nothing on the founder or company history. It appears RC Murray made not only marine lamps but lamps for the railways as well. The company is listed in the Scottish Post Office Directories for 1885 to 1886 as manufacturing tinsmiths, lamp makers, coppersmiths, gas fitters, bell hangers and workers in sheet iron, zinc and brass at street numbers 7, 9 and 11 Carlton Court, Bridge St Glasgow. An additional address is at 37 Cavendish St Glasgow listed for 1910, and also at Pollokshaws Road. The writer assumes the company must have moved sometime between 1886 & 1910 to these addresses. Appears to be part of sighting telescope for artillery. Further ID information has been sought from various sources, in including the Royal Australian Artillery History Company. The RAAHC have been most cooperative and interested in attempting to identify the equipment of which this item is a part, but with no firm details on its use or history at the time of cataloguing. Detailed communication between RAAHC and MERSL are available from the latter.Off-centre ring part way along barrel has engravings for elevation (?), ranging from 57 to 69 (see 4th picture above). Actual numbers engraved are 57 63 69, with small engravings to mark each degree between these intervals.

W.D & H.O.Wills (Australia) Ltd began manufacturing tobacco products in 1913 at its Raleigh Park factory in Kensington, Sydney. In 1945 an estate of 16 acres was purchased at East Bentleigh, Melbourne, with a further 22 acres purchased later and the Virginia Park manufacturing branch was established. The 1950s were to be one of the most successful decades in the company’s history and it enjoyed a peak of 83 per cent market share in 1954. But this was also a period of increased competition as Phillip Morris and Rothmans entered the Australian tobacco market. By 1972, increased competition meant that the company’s market share had slipped to 39%. By the time tobacco advertising was banned on Australian radio and television in 1976, Wills' market share had fallen a further 6%. In 1985 Wills combined the separate factory operations in Sydney and in Melbourne into one site at Pagewood, Sydney which took on the name Virginia Park. In 1941, the scientific instrument manufacturing firms of  Henry Hughes & Son Ltd, London, England, and  Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland, came together to form Kelvin & Hughes Ltd. Kelvin Company History: The origins of the company lie in the highly successful and strictly informal relationship between William Thomson (1824-1907), Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University from 1846-1899 and James White, a Glasgow optical maker. James White (1824-1884) founded the firm of James White, an optical instrument maker in Glasgow in 1850 and was involved in supplying and mending apparatus for Thomson university laboratory and working with him on experimental constructions. White was declared bankrupt in August 1861 and released several months later. In 1870, White was largely responsible for equipping William Thomson laboratory in the new University premises at Gilmore hill. From 1876, he was producing accurate compasses for metal ships to Thomson design during this period and this became an important part of his business in the last years of his life. He was also involved in the production of sophisticated-sounding machinery that Thomson had designed to address problems encountered laying cables at sea, helping to make possible the first transatlantic cable connection. At the same time, he continued to make a whole range of more conventional instruments such as telescopes, microscopes and surveying equipment. White's association with Thomson continued until he died. After his death, his business continued under the same name, being administered by Matthew Edwards (until 1891 when he left to set up his own company. Thomson who became Sir William Thomson and then Baron Kelvin of Largs in 1892, continued to maintain his interest in the business after James White's death. In 1884 raising most of the capital needed to construct and equip new workshops in Cambridge Street, Glasgow. At these premises, the company continued to make the compass Thomson had designed during the 1870s and to supply it in some quantity, especially to the Admiralty. At the same time, the firm became increasingly involved in the design, production and sale of electrical apparatus. In 1899, Lord Kelvin resigned from his University chair and became, in 1900, a director in the newly formed limited liability company Kelvin & James White Ltd which had acquired the business of James White. At the same time Kelvin's nephew, James Thomson Bottomley (1845-1926), joined the firm. In 1904, a London branch office was opened which by 1915 had become known as Kelvin, White & Hutton Ltd. Falconer Company History: G Falconer (Hong Kong Ltd) appear to have had a retail presence in Hong Kong since 1885, according to the company website, and currently have a shop in the Peninsula Hotel. G Falconer was the Hong Kong selling agent for several British companies. Ross Ltd of 111 New Bond St London was one and the other was Kelvins Nautical Instruments. Falconers were primarily watchmakers, jewellers and diamond merchants.They were also agents for Admiralty Charts, Ross binoculars and telescopes, and sold English Silverware and High Class English Jewellery. In 1928 the company was operating from the Union Building opposite the Hong Kong general post office. It is unclear if the item is an original Sextant made by Kelvin prior to his amalgamation with Henry Hughes & Sons in 1941 as Kelvin appears to have only made compasses up to this date. If the Sextant can be established that it was made by Kelvin then it is very significant and a rare item made for and distributed through their Hong Kong selling agents G Falconer Ltd. There are many Sextants advertised for sale stating "Kelvin & Hughes 1917 model sextant". These can be regarded as replicas as the company was not formed until 1941 and production of marine instruments was not fully under way until after the war in 1947. Further investigation needs to be undertaken to accurately determine the provenance of this item. As the writer currently has the impression that the subject object was possibly made by Kelvin and Hughes in the mid to late 20th century or is a replica made by an unknown maker in the late 1970s. Purchased as an exhibition of marine navigational instruments for the Flagstaff Hill museum. The Sextant is a brass apparatus with filters and telescope lens, and comes with a wooden felt lined storage box. It is a doubly reflecting navigation instrument that measures the angular distance between two visible objects. The primary use of a sextant is to measure the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation.G Falconer and Co. he subject item is a pedal-powered rip saw with a tilting table made in the USA by W.F. & John Barnes Co. of Rockford, Illinois, between 1874 and 1890. The saw's blade moves rapidly in a circular motion and is driven by a pedal that spins a heavy flywheel with a leather belt attached to a gear drive that in turn drives the circular saw blade. The operator holds a wood workpiece on the table and moves it forward so the blade cuts it to the desired width and length. Company History: WF & John Barnes Co. was established in 1869, by making a formal partnership between William F. Barnes and John Barnes in 1872, and then incorporating in 1884. This company was an early manufacturer of pedal-powered equipment. By 1881 they were also making powered machinery such as lathes and pedestal drills. Many companies were making lightweight foot-powered equipment, but Barnes and the Seneca Falls Co. were the only ones to also make professional-grade workshop machines. From the beginning of their existence, they focused on pedal-powered machinery and specialised in making scroll saws. By 1937 the company focus had completely shifted to automotive assembly machinery, and custom-built machinery, machine tools, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical controls and systems, including nuclear hardware. their production of foot-powered machinery had ceased. In the intervening years, they have got out of manufacturing completely. After a series of ownership changes, their equipment parts and stock were purchased in 1998 by LeBlond Ltd. of Amelia, Ohio. A poster information board, white text on black, for cartoon in 5RAR display.On the 4th May 1966, the majority of 5RAR C Company (1st tour) arrived at Vung Tau South Vietnam on board the converted aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney, The following day they were ferried ashore on American landing crafts. As they approached the beach, they heard an order that has remained with them until this day. "Fix Bayonets!" Had Vung Tau been over-run by Viet Cong? Should we put a round up the spout? Then again, did we even have a round to put up the spout? Q-Sgt Bob Trenear heard the order with dismay and stated "Fix Bayonets, bloody hell I packed mine in the bottom of my pack!" This was supposed to be a secured area. The Americans (who were working on the beach) thought it a great joke with comments such as "Put those pig stickers away before you hurt yourselves". Unfortunately, this isn't the original cartoon. However Richard Martin created a new one in 2012 and donated it to the Company's Mushroom Club. The original cartoon was published in an Australian newspaper in 1966. A moulding plane is a specialised plane used for making the complex shapes found in wooden mouldings that are used to decorate furniture or other wooden objects. Traditionally, moulding planes were blocks of wear-resistant hardwood, often beech or maple, which were worked to the shape of the intended moulding. The blade or iron was likewise formed to the intended moulding profile and secured in the body of the plane with a wooden wedge. A traditional cabinetmakers shop might have many, perhaps hundreds, of moulding planes for the full range of work to be performed. Large crown mouldings required planes of six or more inches in width, which demanded great strength to push and often had additional peg handles on the sides, allowing the craftsman's apprentice or other workers to pull the plane ahead of the master who guided it. Company History: We know little of John Manners other than his firm was acquired by Alexander Mathieson & Sons in 1822, Mathieson were one of the leading makers of hand tools in Scotland at this time. 1792 was deemed by Mathieson & Sons to be that of its foundation and it was in all likelihood the year in which John Manners had also set up his plane-making workshop on Saracen Lane off the Gallowgate in the heart of Glasgow, not far from the Saracen's Head Inn. Alexander Mathieson (1797–1851) is recorded in 1822 as a plane-maker at 25 Gallowgate, but in the following year at 14 Saracen's Lane, it is presumed having taken over the premises of John Manners. The 1841 national census described Alexander Mathieson as a master plane-maker at 38 Saracen Lane with his son Thomas Adam working as a journeyman plane-maker, from 1822 we hear nothing regards what happened to John Manners.A vintage tool made by a known maker John Manners the item is a significant wood working tool from the late 18th century that today is quite rare. As this maker sold his business to Alexander Mathieson another collectable tool maker in the early 19th century. This item would be sought after by wood working tool collectors and it gives us a snapshot of how cabinet makers went about creating furniture during this time period. The 1950s were to be one of the most successful decades in the company’s history and it enjoyed a peak of 83 per cent market share in 1954. But this was also a period of increased competition as Phillip Morris and Rothmans entered the Australian tobacco market. By the time tobacco advertising was banned on Australian radio and television in 1976, Wills' market share had fallen a further 6%. Kelvin Company History: The origins of the company lie in the highly successful, if strictly informal, the relationship between William Thomson (1824-1907), Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University from 1846-1899 and James White, a Glasgow optical maker. James White (1824-1884) founded the firm of James White, who was an optical instrument maker in Glasgow in 1850. He was involved in supplying and mending apparatus for Thomson's university laboratory and working with him on experimental constructions. White was actually declared bankrupt in August 1861 and released several months later. In 1870, White was largely responsible for equipping William Thomson's laboratory in the new University premises at Gilmore hill. From 1876, he was producing accurate compasses for metal ships to Thomson's design during this period and this became an important part of his business in the last years of his life. He was also involved in the production of sophisticated sounding machinery that Thomson had designed to address problems encountered laying cables at sea, helping to make possible the first transatlantic cable connection. At the same time, he continued to make a whole range of more conventional instruments such as telescopes, microscopes and surveying equipment. White's association with Thomson continued until he died. After his death, his business continued under the same name, being administered by Matthew Edwards (until 1891 when he left to set up his own company). Thomson, who became Sir William Thomson and then Baron Kelvin of Largs in 1892, continued to maintain his interest in the business after James White's death in 1884, raising most of the capital needed to construct and equip new workshops in Cambridge Street, Glasgow. In 1923, the company produced its first recording echo sounder and in 1935, a controlling interest in the company was acquired by S Smith & Son Ltd resulting in the development and production of marine and aircraft instruments. Following the London office's destruction in the Blitz of 1941, a collaboration was entered into with Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd resulting in the establishing Marine Instruments Ltd. Following the formal amalgamation of Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd and Henry Hughes & Sons Ltd in 1947 to form Kelvin & Hughes Ltd., Marine Instruments Ltd then acted as regional agents in the UK for Kelvin & Hughes Ltd who were essentially now a part of Smith's Industries Ltd founded in 1944 and the successors of S Smith & Son Ltd. Kelvin & Hughes Ltd went on to develop various marine radar and echo sounders supplying the Ministry of Transport, and later the Ministry of Defence. The firm was liquidated in 1966 but the name was continued as Kelvin Hughes, a division of the Smiths Group. Bolton Bros. Pty Ltd. History tells us that Benjamin Bolton and his two eldest sons, William and Arthur, began a printing business known as Bolton & Sons on March 25, 1885. Since its commencement in 1885, Bolton Office National has been locally owned and operated and is committed to being the leader in the provision of service and procurement solutions. Located in Bendigo, Bolton’s Office National is Central Victoria’s premier service provider of office products & solutions, providing procurement solutions for Stationery & Office Supplies, Office Furniture & Equipment, Business Technology Equipment, Printing Services, Industrial & Corporate Workwear, Photocopiers & Multi-Function Device Support. The location of the original printing business was in High Street but later moved to Williamson Street where the business underwent a name change to Bolton Bros and expanded into manufacturing paper bags and other stationery lines. In 1902, Bolton Bros moved to 43 Mitchell Street, which housed the retail stationery department and the main office, while the printing factory was on the second and third floors. Next door at 47 Mitchell Street, the wholesale division and machine service department operated. William and Arthur Bolton and their sons travelled throughout central and northern Victoria selling their own products and representing other companies. They are credited with being the innovators of the loose-leaf ledger.
