Presentation to D J Irwin, the Depot Foreman at Geelong following the operation of the last tram No. 4 on 24 March 1956. Mr Irwin subsequently became the Depot Foreman in Ballarat. Recovered by the donor, with approval of the Depot Foreman, from the wreckage in the SEC Ballarat yard from the demolished Tram No. 20 that was involved in a collision on 16/9/1970. One of the support members, near the bell striker has been broken through and the area where it was secured to the roof of the tram at the same end has been bent. Bell portion of a tramcar conductor's bell. Approximately. 100mm diameter, about 35mm deep with a raised or bossed hole at the top 4.5mm at the top. Bell possibly cast or pressed brass, appears to have been damaged or repaired due to excess brass in portion of the bell and on the underside where signs of brass welding are apparent. If from a horse tram, would have most likely been made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide SA. Photo of Ballarat tram 27, southbound at Grey St. loop waiting to cross a City bound tram car. Has one male passenger waiting to board the inbound tram and a conductor (in SEC hat) waiting to board the tram and act as the conductor back into the City. Trams between Bell St. and Sebastopol during the day, were driver only. Conductors changed trams at Bell St. or wherever they crossed one another on the single track. Tram has destination of "Sebastopol", and advertisements for "Twin Lakes" and Whitehorse whiskey. Note long grass on the left hand side of the photo.
