John William Henry Austin who emigrated with his brother Lindsay James to Australia in 1852, eventually settled in Durham Lead. Donald Lewis McRae was a farmer of Scottish descent and well known sportsman from the Western District who then became a publican in Horsham. He took over as licensee of the Crown Hotel in Buninyong in 1935. After his death in 1937, his widow Catherine, and subsequently his son Lou and daughter Lil continued to run the hotel until circa 1970.The McRae family were well known and respected in the Buninyong community as the licensees of the Crown Hotel from 1935 to around 1970. Cecilia was a Harrington born at Blue Bridge in the latter part of the 19th century. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Memories compiled by Peter Rosewall; who attended the last NDSN school PTS 108 between 1986 - 89.This is a copy of a photograph of a plaque titled "Servientes" which remembers the Northern District School of Nursing which operated from March 1950 course which trained nurses in a three-year course. Lieutenant Albert Sargent VX15290 was born on the 3rd of November, 1918 at Wangaratta in Victoria. He was a member of Z Special Unit and involved in Operation RIMAU. when he was captured and executed by the Japanese in Malaya on the 7th of July, 1945 during WW2. Operation RIMAU - In September, 1944, 23 British and Australian members of Z Special Unit travelled from Australia by submarine to the outskirts of Singapore Harbour then under Japanese occupation. Their mission was to attack and destroy enemy shipping from small submersible boats using magnetic limpet mines. Margaret Rose Teagle (1912-1978) married Kenneth Douglas Ingram in 1935. She had two children wiuth Ken Ingram; Kenneth Albert (1937) and Pamela Lorraine (1941). Former family home of Mr. Frederick Eldred (Fred) Griffith in the 1950s, where present day Griffith Park is situated on the Yarra River at Eltham. Fred Griffith was also a Councillor (1945, 1951-1953) and former Shire President (1951) of the Shire of Eltham. Faye Walker (nee Harris) spent her first ten years living in the house. She recalls "there was a huge tin shed to the rear but toward the east of the house. I assume this is what people were thinking of when reference was made to the ‘’packing shed’. When I was small in the 50s, the shed was no longer being used for fruit packing but by the Griffith family as storage. Many of the pear trees remained but were no longer a commercial venture.
