This item was made and worn by Marjorie Burton. This item was wornduring summer holidays in Croyde,a village on the west-facing coastline of North Devon, England. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who mademanyof Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11This item is an example of ahome-madepiece of clothing and reflects the needlework skills of women in the mid twentieth century.A pair of lime green cotton bloomers - home-made. Large 75cm tall plastic doll with curly blonde hair. Her eyes close when she is laid on her back. She is dressed in a cream muslin dress with vertical inserts of white braid. It is also trimmed with wide cream cotton lace on the bodice and hem and burgundy insert on the bodice. A burgundy sash is around her waist. Underneath the dress is a cream cotton pintucked petticoat trimmed with various cream laces and cream cotton bloomers trimmed with cotton lace and white satin bows. She is wearing black socks and brown canvas shoes with plastic soles. Inside the front page it is advertising the line of the lingerie with its new Colours. It includes negligee/night set, night dresses, pyjamas, bedjackets, Princess slips and half slip, vests and spencers, briefs, panties and bloomers, and cotton vests. All Items included an item number, description, colour and sizes available. The back cover was white card with black print. The four star banner was lime green with Hanro printed in Black. Clothing. Waist band 10 cms deep at side seams, dipping to a 16cm peak at centre front, and 15 cm deep at centre back. A plackett on the left hand side fastens with two metal press-studs, and a metal hook (probably a metal or cotton stitched eye, but this area has been damaged, and no eye is visible). All edges (except hemline) ie sleeves, and centre front, including neck edge, are finished in perle thread, buttonhole stitched two cm wide scallops. Satin stitch, and cut work embroidery, in a floral design, are on the lower edge of the short sleeves and on the front bodice.The waistline has a four cm wide band of ribbon, in an insertion design,- but there is no ribbon insertion evident. This would be the only form of closure, from the waistline a slightly gathered panel,22cm deep, gives a peplum effect. Hemline is faced with a 1.7cm wide cotton facing. The ribbon insertion panel has alternating 1.2cm wide floral embroidered ribbon and one cm wide plain ribbon. Magyer sleeves-extending from the side seam just above the waistline - bodice all one piece of fabric - no seams.Accompaning note - No date. The bloomers (11400.931), belonged to Antoinette Catling of Bendigo and were part of her trousseaux. They would be 80+ years old. Fine white cotton, with a drawstring in a 1.5xcm deep casing around the waistline. Completely opened at centre front, through crotch, and up the centre back to within 14cm of the waistline. One dart on either side of front, and two darts on either side of back. Machine stitched. A 2.5cm wide cotton lace is inset into a zig zag pattern around each leg. In each V shape a 1.5cm lace insert in a fan,under the V shapes are inserted needle woven bows, shape is inserted. Seven extremely fine pin tucks border the edge of the legs, which have a three cm wide lace edging. Split drawers were worn in the era when women wore corsets. The split front and back allowed women to go to the toilet, as the corsets could not be removed to allow for an act of nature.Accompanying note - No date. The bloomers belonged to Miss Antoinette Catling of Bendigo and were part of her trousseaux. They would be 80+ years old. This item of underclothing, called a "combination" is one of several linen and clothing items that were made and belonged to Mrs. Eliza Towns and donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Eliza was born Eliza Gould in 1857 in South Melbourne (Emerald Hill) and in 1879 married Charles Towns. In the early 1880's they moved to Nhill in western Victoria and remained there for the rest of their married life. Charles was a jeweller and later became an accountant and for many years was involved with the Shire Council, the local show committee (A & P Society), the Hospital Committee and the Board of the local newspaper (the Nhill Free Press). They had three children and lived a life that would be regarded as comfortably "middle class". Eliza probably had a treadle sewing machine and would have made many of her own clothes as well as clothes for her children - adding her own handmade embroidered or crocheted decorative trim. Combination undergarments combined the chemise and drawers into one garment. The combination is divided, or bifurcated, from the waist to the crutch for easier urinating. This one-piece type of underwear was worn by females from the 1860s and into the early 1900s. The 19th Century garments had front button closures like this one, and those made in the 1900s more often had back closures. Combination underwear was popular because the all-in-one design had far fewer gathers and bulk, making the other clothing look much smoother. Their primary use was to protect clothing from perspiration and because they were made with cotton or linen, were easy to wash. Although they were worn under the corset, next to the skin (and therefore not meant to be seen), they were often decorated with lace and embroidery. Although these combinations are made with a plain cotton fabric, Eliza Towns has incorporated pin tucks, hand embroidery and crocheted lace to embellish her garment. This baby bodice was created using machine and hand stitching, by Phoebe Lowell, a 13-year-old schoolgirl at St Michael's, St Kilda in 1916. It was purchased in the late 1990s by the donor who later moved to Emerald but, at the time, had a 2nd hand decoration shop in Camberwell when she purchased this as part of a group of garments which included bloomers, lace collars and cuffs, camisoles etc - all of which have been donated to the Museum. The donor was advised at the time of her purchase that the garments were over 100 years old although this baby bodice was made in the early 20th century.This doll's apron is a reminder of the tuition which schoolgirls routinely received in sewing and embroidery as these were considered essential skills for a future housewife.White sleeveless cotton bodice with a one-button opening at the neck. Neckline and front opening are finished with double rows of top stitching. This child's cotton blouse was handmade by 15-year-old schoolgirl, Phoebe Lewell in 1918. She won the Form V Needlework Prize at the Speech Day for St Michael's, St Kilda in that year. Hand sewn, sleeveless fine woven cotton, loose-fitting garment detailed with deep cream coloured ribbon lace on armholes. The neckline is square-shaped and has a broad band of ribbon filled beneath lace detailing.
