Robert John Couper (born 1871) was Emerald's first butcher, establishing his butchery c. 1900 and soon taking up a position near the corner of Main Street and Emerald-Monbulk Road. He operated the business until the Madigan family took over in 1919. The building in the foreground of the image is likely Robert Couper's - Emerald's first butchery which was established in approximately 1900 and later owned by the Madigan family. It was located near the corner of what are now Main Street and Monbulk Road, near today's Madigan Way. If the butchery in the photograph - which was likely taken in the first decade of the twentieth century - is indeed Couper's, this photo is likely looking down Main Street from the intersection with Monbulk Road. This particular thoroughfare connecting Belgrave-Gembrook Road and Emerald-Monbulk Road, now home to many local and major business, has changed greatly over the last century. This dirt road was once home to the first Emerald butcher, established by Robert John Couper around 1900. Located on the corner of Main Street and Monbulk Road, the butcher was first run out of Couper's home, then it moved into a shop built on their property and customers were most often served by his wife Mabel. The butcher was then purchased by the Madigan Family in 1924 and run by Timothy James Madigan following his return from World War One service. Animals were slaughtered on-site, then stored in an underground cellar. Meat was then purchased in the store-front or delivered to local towns and homes by horse-drawn carriage and, eventually, delivery vans.This photograph demonstrates with incredible clarity just how greatly the local Emerald township has changed over the last century, especially on a thoroughfare as central as the one pictured.This black and white photograph features a dirt street lined with trees and buildings. On the left, a street sign points to locations such as Lilydale, Monbulk, Gembrook, Ferntree Gully, Macclesfield, and Melbourne. Two women stand behind the sign, waiting to cross the road. General Motors Holden imported this vehicle into Australia from Canada in approximately 1941 or 1942 as 4 door sedan. The Oldsmobile company believed that at the end of WW2 there would be a need for coupes worldwide. GMH at that time were heavily committed to he war effort and the proposal was to convert this vehicle into a coupe in line for Coup with the Oldsmobile policy. The conversion went ahead under some secrecy as the war effort had priority. The result was by the end of war this coupe was manufactured at the GMH Fisherman's Bend plant. The car was taken to both Brisbane and Sydney motor shows and was immediately a success with GMH taking orders at both shows. However when these orders were forwarded to Oldsmobile USA the response was less than favourable. Apparently Oldsmobile had been inundated with orders for Coupes in both Canada and the USA and could not fullfill any overseas orders due to lack of capacity. This vehicle under instructions from USA was to be hidden and not used for sales promotion anywhere in Australia. The exact location of this vehicle is somewhat lost between 1946 and 1990's. It was located in Kyneton in Victoria where it had been placed in the back of Kyneton GMH dealership. It was extracted by Doug___ from Warrandyte, removed from the blackberries and undergrowth and taken for restoration. Progress was slow and it was sold to the museum fully restored by Mr Rob Treen Glassy Spur Victoria. New Bendigo Gold Project The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting. Stephen's Butcher's shop operated after Couper's Butchers ceased. The site had always been a butchers shop, until Bill Stephens and his son Gary closed. The reason why Bill Stephen ceased business was he liked to spread sawdust on the floor of the shop. When health regs deemed this practise not sanitary, Bill and Gary decided to close the business. The Emerald Butcher was established in the early 1900s by Robert Couper, and purchased by the Madigan family in 1924. It was located at the corner of Main Street and Emerald-Monbulk Road, at 381 Belgrave-Gembrook Road where Resale Therapy is as of 2026. The vehicle pictured appears to be a custom Chevrolet National Series AB Sedan, a model released in 1928 - allegedly the year this photograph was taken. In 1954, as the defeated French forces left the State of Vietnam, Ngô Đình Diệm, a devout Roman Catholic, became the first prime minister. In 1956, a government-controlled referendum determined that South Vietnam should become a republic rather than stay under the control of Emperor Bảo Đại (who was living in Cannes, on the French Riviera). Ngô Đình Diệm appointed himself the first President of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). He then appointed his younger brother, Ngô Đình Nhu, to be his chief advisor and head of both South Vietnam’s secret police and its largest intelligence agency. During 1963, a campaign of civil resistance led by Buddhist monks protested religious discrimination. The government’s brutal treatment of Buddhists convinced many that Ngô Đình Diệm should go. While the United States publicly denied playing any part in the 1963 coup that overthrew Diệm, it was revealed that American officials had met with and encouraged the generals who planned the coup.
