Cropped photograph of male Iredale. In 1858, James Iredale owned the General Store in Main Street Greensborough, when it became the Town’s Post Office. The Farmers Arms Hotel was built on the corner of Main and Hailes Street in 1864 by George Iredale to cater for the ever increasing number of wood carters and other hauliers carting their wares between Melbourne, timber mills and the gold fields. Riding crops are used as a controlling mechanism by horse riders – to regulate the speed of the horse etc. This one was owned by J.C. Lumsden was a jockey in Warrnambool. JC Lumsden or John Calder Lumsden lived at 7 Nelson Street Warrnambool with his parents, father also JC Lumsden. John junior was an amateur jockey in 1950's and sixties and was also a distinguished show rider in "flag races"and the like, winning at local shows and the Melbourne Show. He was also a leading race horse trainer at Warrnambool. This item may well have been his fathers. Although we have no record of where this item came from the following information has recently been uncovered. It has a rounded wooden stick with interwoven material around one section and the remains of a string handle. The end of the stick has a leather tongue or keeper. There is a knob at the top end of the stick with a brass disc inserted with the name of the owner. Study of Winter's Swamp commissioned by BEN and completed by BHS. The swamp was named after one of the first European settlers in the district. Winter Swamp LAT -37 32 LONG 143 47, Parish of Dowling Forest, County of Grenville Winter Swamp, on the southwest corner of Ballarat West Town Common, was not included in the original proclamation of the Common in 1861. However, being marshland, it was not considered suitable for grazing, so was added to the Common soon after 1861. Winter Swamp is a large wetland with native and exotic pasture significant for wildlife. John Winter (Jock) was born in Berwickshire, Scotland. He married Janet Margaret Irving the daughter of Robert Irving, advocate, Bonshaw, Dumfries, Scotland. Winter died in Ballarat in 1875 and was buried at the Ballaarat Old Cemetery. He took up the run Bonshaw from 1841; Leigh River Buninyong 1842-46; Junction, Delatite, March 1851 to September 1862; with sons: Carag Carag and Corop, April 1857 to September 1872; Colbinabbin and Stewart’s Plains, April 1857 to December 1872; St Germains February 1867 to March 1871. (The name became Winter-Irving in 1890). Mr John Winter, who died on August 22 at the age of 72, was a man of some note it the mining community of Ballarat. He was a self-made man, and one of our oldest colonists, it being over a quarter of a century age since he took up county about Ballarat and settled at Bonshaw. He died very rich. It is calculated that if he had retained an interest in all his runs, his income must have been not less than £10,000 or £50,000 a year. Some eight or ten years ago he sold his Bonshaw pre-emption to the Bonshaw Gold mining Company for £20,000, and a few years later the ground belonging now to Winter's Freehold Company brought him £50,000 more, the payment being made at the requisition of the deceased in sovereigns. In these relations Mr. Winter has been closely identified with the mining industry at Ballarat. The deceased was a native of Lauder, in Berwickshire, and landed in Victoria several years before the gold discovery.The principle task of this project was the delivery of a report outlining the history of European settlement in the Skipton and Cardigan/Ballarat districts as pertinent to the use of and impact on the natural environment of the two reserves Skipton Common and Winter Swamp. The report was delivered in digital form only. The report, upon completion, was presented to the Network’s Committee in order to discuss the project. The report identified and described the uses of Skipton Common and Winter Swamp, and their impacts. In particular, this report examined farming/grazing (official and informal), mining, vegetation removal (including the removal of woodlands for timber, grasslands for pasture improvement) & use of riparian areas for access to water and timber removal. Recording the more benign and environmentally friendly uses such as picnicking, community activities, nature walks and the roles of organisations such as Field Naturalists’ and Bird Observers’ clubs, school and scout/guide groups will be relevant in helping to depict overall community attitudes towards the reserves; e.g.: has the Common generally been viewed as little more than a grazing paddock and fire hazard; has Winter Swamp always been the unknown natural asset that seems to have been its lot for at least the past 40 years? In this regard, the more contemporary history of actions surrounding the use and management of the reserves is of particular interest, in view of the extant evidence at both reserves; e.g. the actions of the Shire of Ballarat in the 1980s in establishing Winter Swamp as something of a competitor to Lake Wendouree but with a more environmental bent (although almost none of the plants used are indigenous species, but that is part of the story); the trotting track constructed on Skipton Common in the 1960s following representations to Premier Henry Bolte and the cropping of the western section of the Common to raise funds for the town’s new swimming pool, the fertilizing of the land putting an end to the native grassland vegetation. There are obviously multiple sources of information to source in preparing the report, however sources that the contractor is specifically requested to consult are the Skipton Historical Society, the former Skipton Common managers (specifically Graeme Pett), the Cardigan Windermere Landcare Group and the Learmonth Historical Society (believed to hold many of the former Shire of Ballarat’s records pertaining to the Council’s role as the Committee of Management for both Winter Swamp and the Ballarat West Town Common – Winter Swamp was split between 2 separate Crown Land tenures). The contractor is also encouraged but not required to utilise community newsletters, such as the Skipton Community Newsletter, to publicise and seek information about the project. Skipton Historical Society (Mary Bradshaw) contacted on Thursday 12 June 2.30pm. Mary lived on a farm out of Skipton but is currently living in the township. She remembers walking along the creek of the Common especially in spring and autumn in bare feet and that it was a very pretty place. There were a few snakes around the waterway in summer. People put cows and a couple of horses on the commonage to graze. Graeme Pett has always lived close to the Common and would know a lot about it. William Dower came with his family to the Mt Dandenong in 1898, taking up a 10 acre allotment. William and hs wife Elizabeth had seven boys (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar, Robert) and four girls (Emmy, May, Ada, Ruby). The property secured by William Dower was known as ‘Cambridge Gardens’ and had a two room slab hut. William and his sons added another five rooms using trees from the property. The family established extensive crops and worked hard for their success. Road was formed most of the length from Montrose by contractors Bladin and Dick employing Robert Logan the younger, in 1919 and lay unmetalled till metalled by the contractors in 1922. Mountain ash trees in foreground were on Thomas Hand’s original 23 acre holding. Those beyond coach were on Isaac Jeeves original 160 acre holding Selection Crown Allotment 925(B). This was the area forming part of the inheritance lost by John William Richardson because of the expense of his wife’s illness. Hand enlarged his 23 acres to 305 in 1874. William and his family grew large crops of raspberries on his area, part of which is in the foreground. It had been cleared by his father’s employees before 1877. The section below the Main Road was cultivated by Fred hand, son of William and grandson of Thomas in the twenties before he moved to Redcliffes where he is today (1974). “The Bird God cult is the official lboriisi religion, but there are certain sections of the planet where people worship the sun - not the big Voidstar, but the smaller erratic red star, known as Lanturan on lrusag, and lisa, or “Womb of the Wave Stone” on Iboriis. The sun is thought to be the creator and controller of all things, both benevolent and capricious. Priest of the Sunworshippers sacrifice appropriately coloured fruits and vegetables to the Sun God to ensure continuity of crops and a rich, peaceful life. When the red sun disappears from the sky on its erratic orbit, the God is thought to be displeased and the people gather in great groups to pray for better times. It is at this time that the Sun dances are performed in specially prepared dancing grounds in the forests. This essentially peaceable religion is hated and feared by followers of the Bird God, so that Sunworshippers are hunted and destroyed whenever possible. It is considered a favourable omen if the year’s sacrificial victims can be Sunworshippers, a sure sign of a good future harvest. George Frederick PIERCE No 2839 AIF. The photo shows him wearing the award of the “DCM” which has been superimposed on the photo. George enlisted on 29.6.1915 age 20 years in the 9th Reinforcements 6th Bn AIF, embarked for Eygpt 9.10.1915, embarked for France 2.4.1916, Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1917, KIA Belgium 4.10.1917, no known grave. DCM award. For Conspicious Gallantry and Devotion to Duty. He took Command of his Lewis Gun Section in an attack and bombed an enemy Machine Gun post single handed and captured the Gun. He later carried ammunition to the front line through heavy barrages. He set a splendid example of devotion and courage. This photo has been cropped out of the original which had 3 soldiers in it. Refer Cat No 5459P This is the first item in a large collection that belonged to William (Bill) Thomason. Bill served in the RAN from 1947 - 1949. An art show (incorporating an art competition and sale) was held at Eastland Shopping Centre from the 11th to the 23rd of October, 1976. The art show was a fundraising event for the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). The opening night, which was compered by 3AW radio personality, John Tingle, included a chicken and champagne supper. In this photo, John Tingle presents a prize of a silver coffee service to the winner of the Arthritis Section, Ann Sutherland. A cropped version of this photo appears on page 5 of the Vol 3, December 1976 edition of RAAV News Review - the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria's quarterly newsletter.
