Dame Nellie Melba, born Helen Porter Mitchell (1861-1931), was the first Australian to gain international fame as an opera singer and one of the best-known singers in late Victorian times. She took the name ‘Melba’ from her home town, Melbourne. She sang in Warrnambool on at least two occasions, staying at local homes, including ‘Summer Hill’, belonging to the Murray family and ‘Lyndoch’ as the guest of Florence Lake. In 1927 she sang at the Warrnambool Town Hall with three other assisting artists and this programme records that event. The Warnambool and District Historical Society has an evening bag that was given by Nellie Melba to Miss O’Donnell, a maid at ‘Lyndoch’ at that time. This programme is of considerable significance as it is a memento of the occasion in 1927 when the famous Australian opera singer sang at the Warrnambool Town Hall during her farewell tour. This is a cream-coloured sheet of paper folded into two to make four pages. The front cover has a decorative border and blue printing and a Warrnambool & District Historical Society stamp and the back cover has an advertisement. The middle pages contain blue printing. The folds are torn in parts.Dame Nellie Melba's Farewell Tourdame nellie melba, history of warrnambool, lyndoch, melba farewell tour

Hard cover book. The Hunchback of Notre Dame Author: Victor Hugo Illustrator: Arthur A Dixon Publisher: Collins Clear-Type Press Date: 1910-1925 Further Information: Red Cloth plain hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThe Hunchback of Notre-Dame is Victor Hugo's 1831 historical novel set in fifteenth-century Paris. It follows Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral; Esmeralda, a beautiful Romani street dancer; Claude Frollo, the tormented archdeacon obsessed with her; and Captain Phoebus, the soldier she loves. The novel is as much a portrait of the cathedral itself and medieval Paris as it is a story of its characters. Hugo used the book partly as a plea for the preservation of Gothic architecture, which was being neglected and demolished in his own era. The novel's success is credited with sparking renewed public interest in Notre-Dame and Gothic buildings generally, which contributed to the eventual restoration campaign led by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 1840s.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, the hunchback of notre dame, victor hugo

Nicholas Nickleby. Author: Charles Dickens. Publisher: Oxford University Press, London. Date: 1966-1987 (See note section this document for more information on Edition). Blue leather hardcover, Spine has Author and Title in gold lettering. The spine has a Library label.fictionCharles Dickens (1812–1870) was one of the great English novelists of the Victorian era, famous for vivid characters, social criticism, and stories that were first published in serial form. He began as a journalist, rose to enormous popularity during his lifetime, and wrote major works such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations. “Nicholas Nickleby” starts out as a good hearted but vulnerable young man whose family is left poor after his father’s death. His uncle, Ralph Nickleby, is cold and exploitative, and Nicholas is sent to work at Dothe boys Hall, a school run by the abusive Wackford Squeers family. There Nicholas witnesses appalling treatment of the children, escapes, and takes the mistreated boy Smike with him. After that, the novel follows Nicholas through a series of adventures in London and beyond as he protects his sister Kate, resists his uncle’s schemes, and finds decent allies such as the Cheeryble brothers. The plot mixes melodrama, comedy, family loyalty, and moral struggle, ending with justice restored and the worthy characters rewarded.book, the old curiosity shop, charles dickens, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, great ocean road
