Summary

The novel is better known today by its English title, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. This grand historical novel is set in 1482 Paris and revolves around the doomed gypsy dancer Esmeralda, the tortured archdeacon Claude Frollo, the dashing but shallow captain Phoebus, and the fiercely loyal, deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo.
By the time you reach the final volume, the narrative is driving toward its intense, tragic climax. Beyond the human drama, the book is a love letter to Gothic architecture; Hugo famously wrote it to spark a preservation movement to save the crumbling Notre-Dame Cathedral from neglect and modernisation.
