Paterson, of Happy Valley, who died at his father's residence on Tuesday Inst, took place on Thursday afternoon at the Linton Ceme tery. The writer at this time cannot ascertain any significant historical information regarding the company or its founder, however lamps made by James Paterson of Melbourne are rare and regarded as collector's items and would command significant sale prices. All that is currently known is that the James Paterson Lamp manufacturing company were located at 30 Little Collins St Melbourne, and were active in Dec 1885 and in 1886 from newspaper articles of the time. Therefore the assumption is that the subject lamp was made in the late 19th to the first quarter of the 20th century.A significant item used in the marine industry on many ships, the company made kerosene lamps for other industries as well and was a well-known Melbourne based company in the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries.Marine masthead copper ship's lamp with a handle at the top and holders at the side. David Frazer (1966- ) David Frazer is an Australian artist who works in painting, wood engraving, etching, lithography and bronze. Born in Victoria, David Frazer graduated from the Phillip Institute of Technology, Melbourne with a Fine Art degree specialising in painting. In 1996 he achieved an Honours degree from Monash University specialising in Printmaking and in 2000, gained his Master of Arts. In 2002, David was awarded the Keith Wingrove Bookplate Design Award and in 2007, he was a major prizewinner at the International Print Biennial in Guanlan, China and a featured Australian artist on the ABC’s documentary series ‘Artist at Work’. When the Victorian Blind Cricket Association approached Mr Paterson for assistance in gaining access to a permanent cricket pitch upon which games could be played, it set in chain a series of events that remain in place today. Mr Paterson had been heavily involved in the formation of the Association for the Blind and saw this as a problem to be solved. Raising money through public donation and door knocking, Mr Paterson arranged the purchase of land on the banks of Gardiner's Creek, and adjacent to the tram and train lines. The land was raised, to avoid flooding, and a surface prepared. The sportsground was adjacent to the AAB, however due to the interest of Malvern Council in the land and knowing that the AAB at that time was in financial difficulties, a Trust was set up to handle the management with Mr Paterson, Mr Gould the Malvern Council Town Clerk and George Maxwell as trustees. A clubhouse was also needed to allow players to take shelter during matches and once again, Mr Paterson came to the rescue. Using their personal funds, Mr and Mrs Paterson loaned the Trust the monies required for the building. This book was awarded to David McMurtrie Paterson for English as first prize in the fourth form in 1886. David enrolled in Ballarat College in 1886 at the age of 14. In the original register it lists parent/guardian as John Paterson, contractor, residing at 12 Errard Street South. It also states that previous school was SS.33, upper VI th form [subsequently known as Dana Street P.S].Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown cloth with black and gilt illustrated front cover and spine. Geoffrey MAINWARING (29 October 1912-13 April 2000) Born Adelaide, South Australia Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an art teacher at Thebarton Technical School (1928-36). Mainwaring was adept at depicting a variety of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and was very competent using a variety of media, including pencil, oils, and watercolour. He was a confident draftsperson, and completed many sensitively rendered portraits that give an insight into the character of the sitter. In June 1941 Geoffrey Mainwaring (SX13471) joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after five months was transferred to the Engineers and employed as a Sergeant-Instructor, specialising in demolitions. In late 1942, he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probation. On 27 May 1947, Mainwaring was discharged from the Army, having served for five and a half years. He was appointed as an artist on a civilian basis until his paintings were completed in March 1948. In 1949 he was appointed Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines (now Federation University Australia). He continued to paint commissioned portraits for the Australian War Memorial until the late 1950s. Geoffrey Mainwaring died at Ballarat in April 2000. David Alexander was a medical doctor in Ballarat for many years. Alongside his medical work he was a committed artist, producing a large body of work over his lifetime. He was an instigator of the Federation University Art Collection and was a great supporter of local artists. Geoff Mainwaring taught painiting at the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection.
