A very welcome book for the Wycheproof archives, being a record of many local people - mainly debutantes. Names recorded back to 1938. The origin of debutante balls was that the woman was old enough to be married, and part of the purpose of her coming out was to display her to eligible bachelors and their families with a view to marriage within a select circle. The twenty five debutantes made their debut in Sunbury at the Memorial Hall late c1950s or early 1960s. Mrs Aitken trained the girls for the event.Debutante Balls were a popular annual event in the local Sunbury community and were well attended. Young Farmers is a network of clubs for young people aged 16 to 30. Young Farmers helps people meet new friends, improve skills, participate in their community and have fun. The ball was held in the Parish Hall in October 1947. This was the first debutante ball held in Linton after the end of World War II. Organisers were Mrs H. D. The date on the photograph states "approx 1946", actually 1947. The Bendigo RSL conducted Annual and Debutante Balls for many years as a fund raiser. The following article appeared in the Argus; “Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Thursday 14 August 1947, page 8 ________________________________________ 12 debutantes presented at Bendigo Ball Early Victorian posies which matched the pastel flowers in their hair were carried by the 12 debutantes who came out at the Annual RSL Ball at Bendigo Town Hall last night.
