Debutante balls were originally intended as an avenue through which to present young women eligible for marriage to prospective high-society partners. Modern balls have less focus on matrimony. Debutante balls in St Kilda, particularly at St Kilda Town Hall, were prominent social events from the 1920s to the 1980s.
