This is an early photograph of the Black Powder Mill after the Explosive Factory was closed down, but before any restoration work took place and it was placed on the Voctorian Heritage List.Black Powder Mill (Building No. 745) - Built: 1942, to supplement output from the nearby ICIANZ plant (operating since 1935). - Function: Ground gunpowder for bombs and shells using an edge-runner mill—a technology dating back to the 16th century. - Design: - Two levels: milling equipment above, mechanical gear below. - Reinforced concrete walls and sacrificial wooden blast doors directed explosions safely toward Kororoit Creek. - Incident: In 1944, an explosion injured two workers; one later died from burns. The Black Powder Mill in Deer Park (Cairnlea) is the only surviving building of Australia’s former gunpowder manufacturing industry, built in 1942 as part of the Albion Explosives Factory. It is heritage-listed and remains a rare reminder of Melbourne’s munitions history. The mill was saved by a group of community members which ultimately formed the Friends of the Black Powder Mill. This group has subsequently been taken over by the Sunshine & District Historical Society. The Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, held at Bendigo from 13 November 1901 to 14 May 1902. The courts were numbered from one, or had titles like “Machinery”, “Agricultural”, “Naval & Military Court” and “Art”. The female visitors to the Exhibition were able to view exhibits deemed suitable for the fairer sex and located within their own “Women’s Court”. There were exhibits such as “Parasols & Umbrellas”, cotton and haberdashery from Manchester and Staffordshire, “Corsets & Embroideries” from Paris. The most valuable exhibits were mining machinery such as Taylor Horsfield’s £850 “Air Compressor & Rock Borer”. “Bohemian Glassware” brought down from Sydney was valued at £600. The profits from this Exhibition were used to fund the sculpture known as the Gold Monument, which still gazes along Pall Mall (from the McCrae Street end). The Exhibition’s Cash Book shows payments, which totalled £1160, were made to then up and coming sculptor C.D.Richardson. Weymouth & Co was founded in 1898 by George Andrew Philip Weymouth, who began operating from a small workshop on City Road, South Melbourne (opposite Princes Bridge). Exhibit. In 1857 at the height of the gold rush, with people pouring into Central Victoria from all over the world, three brothers from Denmark – Moritz, Julius and Jacob Cohn – founded a small cordial factory in the booming town of Bendigo. J. Connelly and Co's Exhibit. T.J. Connelly an American immigrant came to the Bendigo goldfields where he later established Connelly’s Tin Shop on the corner of High and Forest Streets 1853. Connelly was named after Thomas Jefferson the famous statesman who wrote much of the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 and became the third United States President. Albion No. 5 Explosives Factory was one of Australia’s major WWII munitions sites, built rapidly from 1939–40 in Deer Park and operated by ICIANZ for the Commonwealth. It produced propellants, explosives and later commercial fertilisers. After European settlement in the mid 1850s, the North Albion site was being used as grassland for farming and grazing. In the late 1930's, the threat of another world war in Europe was developing and the Australian Government decided it needed to increase and to be more independent in the manufacturing of munitions and explosives. The Albion site was chosen opposite the existing commercial ICI ANZ factory. ICI ANZ was chosen to design, construct and operate the new facilities. In 1940 the factory first began production of propellants for small arms and artillery that were required by the military forces during WW2. After the end of the WW2 the plant continued producing explosives and fertilizers for commercial use. The site was closed down in 1986, and the site went through an extensive decontamination and cleanup before being redeveloped into a housing estate with a shopping complex located in its center. The Black Powder Mill, built in 1942 is the only remaining building from the Albion explosives Factory. Noel Tozer is a former President of the Friends of the Black powder Mill. Deer Park is named after a park for deer, established by the Melbourne Hunt Club in the late 1800s. The area was initially a rural district with large pastoral estates but its location on Kororoit Creek plus its relative isolation from Melbourne, meant it was ideal for the establishment of Melbourne's first explosives factory in the 1870s. These explosives were used initially in the gold mines in Bendigo and Ballarat and then for ammunition in the World Wars. The Black Powder Mill is the last remaining building from the Albion Explosives Factory and is located in the suburb of Cairnlea. It was used to grind gunpowder for bombs and shells in WW2. In 2001 the Black Powder Mill was included in the National Trust's Heritage Register due to its cultural heritage significance. The Phillip Migrant Hostel was one of the three major post‑war migrant accommodation centers on the former Explosives Factory land at Maribyrnong/Maidstone. It formed the western section of the broader hostel complex and opened in 1971. The striking feature of the hostel was circular arrangement of the buildings. The Tottenham Yard began as a modest goods yard supporting local industries in Braybrook, Tottenham, and West Footscray, the Sunshine industrial belt and the nearby munitions and explosives factories Key features of the early yard included a small number of sidings, a goods shed, a basic loading / unloading facilities and a connection to the Tottenham triangle (Sunshine–Footscray–North Melbourne junction). As the yard expanded with additional siding and larger marshalling areas, there was a requirement to maintain the Ashley Street North – South access route for private and commercial travel. The work involved to solve this problem was to elevate the railway yard and place Ashley Street through a tunnel. This railway underpass for many years was simply known as the Ashley Street Tunnel. By the 1970s, the Tottenham Yard had become one of the largest freight yards in Victoria, second only to Dynon. In the 1982, the level crossing gates at the southern end of tunnel were removed, the tunnel extended southwards and the former Tottenham Railway Station was replaced with an elevated one above the new tunnel extension. During these works the road surface level was lowered to allow for higher trucks to pass through. At this point of time, the reference to tunnel was replaced with underpass. During the 1990’s and 2000’s, there was a decline in the use of the Tottenham Yard and many sidings were removed, shorten, converted to storage or left unused. The Deer Park Leathercloth Factory was a major ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) operation on Station Road, producing “Leathercloth” — a nitrocellulose‑based synthetic coated fabric — and formed part of the wider Deer Park explosives and chemical manufacturing complex. It’s one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in the City of Brimbank.This aerial photograph of the ICI / Leathercloth Factory captures the layout of the factory and the adjacent residential houses in Station Road in the late 1950's.
