The Black Powder Mill in Deer Park (Cairnlea) is the only surviving building of Australia’s former gunpowder manufacturing industry, built in 1942 as part of the Albion Explosives Factory. It is heritage-listed and remains a rare reminder of Melbourne’s munitions history. The mill was saved by a group of community members which ultimately formed the Friends of the Black Powder Mill. This group has subsequently been taken over by the Sunshine & District Historical Society. This is an early photograph of the Black Powder Mill after the Explosive Factory was closed down, but before any restoration work took place and it was placed on the Voctorian Heritage List.Black Powder Mill (Building No. 745) - Built: 1942, to supplement output from the nearby ICIANZ plant (operating since 1935). - Function: Ground gunpowder for bombs and shells using an edge-runner mill—a technology dating back to the 16th century. - Design: - Two levels: milling equipment above, mechanical gear below. - Reinforced concrete walls and sacrificial wooden blast doors directed explosions safely toward Kororoit Creek. - Incident: In 1944, an explosion injured two workers; one later died from burns. The Black Powder Mill is the last surviving building of the former Albion Explosives Factory. When the wider factory was demolished and the Cairnlea estate was being developed, the mill was at risk of being demolished. Local residents and heritage advocates formed Friends of the Black Powder Mill Inc., who became the primary campaigners for its preservation. The Brimbank City Council supported the Friends group’s efforts, including running public surveys and public meetings thus allowing the local residents have their say in the future of Black Powder Mill. There were many people who wanted it restored but there also many people who wanted it demolished. The Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, held at Bendigo from 13 November 1901 to 14 May 1902. The courts were numbered from one, or had titles like “Machinery”, “Agricultural”, “Naval & Military Court” and “Art”. The female visitors to the Exhibition were able to view exhibits deemed suitable for the fairer sex and located within their own “Women’s Court”. There were exhibits such as “Parasols & Umbrellas”, cotton and haberdashery from Manchester and Staffordshire, “Corsets & Embroideries” from Paris. The most valuable exhibits were mining machinery such as Taylor Horsfield’s £850 “Air Compressor & Rock Borer”. “Bohemian Glassware” brought down from Sydney was valued at £600. The profits from this Exhibition were used to fund the sculpture known as the Gold Monument, which still gazes along Pall Mall (from the McCrae Street end). The Exhibition’s Cash Book shows payments, which totalled £1160, were made to then up and coming sculptor C.D.Richardson. Recently a City of Greater Bendigo staff member used both these volumes to write a detailed report about this monument, for Heritage Victoria.Carol Holsworth Collection: Small book Souvenir, 29 pages plus cover; each page. has a photo of the exhibit. Weymouth & Co was founded in 1898 by George Andrew Philip Weymouth, who began operating from a small workshop on City Road, South Melbourne (opposite Princes Bridge). In 1857 at the height of the gold rush, with people pouring into Central Victoria from all over the world, three brothers from Denmark – Moritz, Julius and Jacob Cohn – founded a small cordial factory in the booming town of Bendigo. J. Connelly and Co's Exhibit. T.J. Connelly an American immigrant came to the Bendigo goldfields where he later established Connelly’s Tin Shop on the corner of High and Forest Streets 1853. Connelly was named after Thomas Jefferson the famous statesman who wrote much of the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 and became the third United States President. Deer Park is named after a park for deer, established by the Melbourne Hunt Club in the late 1800s. The area was initially a rural district with large pastoral estates but its location on Kororoit Creek plus its relative isolation from Melbourne, meant it was ideal for the establishment of Melbourne's first explosives factory in the 1870s. These explosives were used initially in the gold mines in Bendigo and Ballarat and then for ammunition in the World Wars. The Deer Park Leathercloth Factory was a major ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) operation on Station Road, producing “Leathercloth” — a nitrocellulose‑based synthetic coated fabric — and formed part of the wider Deer Park explosives and chemical manufacturing complex. It’s one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in the City of Brimbank.This aerial photograph of the ICI / Leathercloth Factory captures the layout of the factory and the adjacent residential houses in Station Road in the late 1950's. Deer Park State School began in 1874 as State School 1434 Braybrook but soon the school became known as the Derrimut on Kororoit Creek State School. This was soon shortened to Kororoit State School The Kororoit State School and was renamed to the Deer Park State School in 1890 when the local area's name was changed from Kororoit Creek to Deer Park. The school suffered several dramatic events due to its proximity to the ICI explosives factory. These events included the windows being blown out after lightning struck the ICI factory, the ceiling collapsed after an explosion at the ICI factory, and a fire destroyed the school in 1942. The 1940's rebuild of the school included a new red brick building with bluestone detailed used from the original building. The new building matched Percy Everett’s Education Department architectural style of the era. This school was relocated to Cairnlea in 2007 and became known as the Cairnlea Park Primary School. War Time History - Established in 1939–40 in response to the looming threat of war in Europe. - Located in North Albion, opposite the ICIANZ chemical plant, which also helped design and operate the facility. - Initially known as Munitions Annexe No. 5, it became the Albion Explosives Factory, producing cordite, TNT, nitroglycerine, nitric acid, and other propellants for small arms and artillery. - By 1942–45, it was one of Australia’s three primary military explosives factories, employing thousands and contributing significantly to the war effort. Post War Time History - Continued production of explosives and fertilizers for commercial use after WWII. - Expanded in 1947–49 with the addition of the RDX plant north of Furlong Road. - Introduced new technologies like synthetic ammonia, DNT, and continuous TNT production through the 1950s–60s.
