From research, which is still to be confirmed, it is believed the Deer Park Lions Club installed the infrastructure in the area, which includes the wooden path, table and bench seat, therefore for convenience we will refer to it as the Lions Club Reserve. Situated on the west bank of the Kororoit Creek, it lies directly opposite the Deer Park Hotel, where a swimming hole once enjoyed popularity among the early residents of Deer Park. Unfortunately, as the surrounding areas were developed for residential and industrial requirements, along came pollution that made these holes unsafe to swim in. The use of these holes were discouraged in the mid 1900's and subsequently the local Councils of the district started to provide man made swimming pools such as the ones located in Sunshine and St. Albans. Today, now an almost forgotten location in Deer Park, the water hole provides a tranquil location for visitors to relax and watch the creek slowly flowing past and the birdlife that frequent the area.Water holes along the Kororoit Creek and Maribyrnong River were once used for providing drinking water, relaxation, recreation sport and spots to cool off on the long summer days.5651.01 - Lions Club Reserve Kororoit Creek West Bank Deer Park 2021 Photo 23.JPG 5651.02 - Lions Club Reserve Kororoit Creek West Bank Deer Park 2021 Photo 17.JPG 5651.03 - Lions Club Reserve Kororoit Creek West Bank Deer Park 2021 Photo 19.JPG 5651.04 - Lions Club Reserve Kororoit Creek West Bank Deer Park 2021 Photo 20.JPG 5651.05 - Lions Club Reserve Kororoit Creek West Bank Deer Park 2021 Photo 21.JPG ballarat road, deer park, kororoit creek, deer park lions club -

Its building later transitioned to new community uses, but its origins remain an important part of Sunshine’s civic and social history. This centre served as a community hub for nearly 50 years, hosting social gatherings, activities, and support programs for older residents. After the senior citizen club was moved, the centre became the Hope of Life Community Church. In January 2026, part demolition of the building started to make it safe. The club formed part of a broader mid‑century movement in Victoria to create formal social, recreational, and welfare spaces for seniors, predating many modern seniors’ centres. It complemented other Lions Club initiatives such as the Sunshine Carnival, the Annual Bonfire, and fundraising for local institutions, embedding the Elderly Citizens Centre within a wider network of civic improvement.5776.01 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 01.jpeg 5776.02 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 02.jpeg 5776.03 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 03.jpeg 5776.04 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 04.jpeg 5776.05 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 05.jpeg 5776.06 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 06.jpeg 5776.07 - Corio Street - Sunshine Elderly Citizen Hall Demolition 2026 Photo 07.jpeg sunshine elderly citizens hall, sunshine elderly citizens club, sunshine lions club, hope of life community church, corio street, watt street, sunshine -

The Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) is the highest form of recognition from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), honoring individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to humanitarian service. With over 520,000 recipients worldwide, this award is bestowed upon Lions and members of the public who have demonstrated exceptional humanitarian service. Loretta Martin was part of Lions ladies as women couldn’t become members in 1981. Loretta officially joined in August 2013 after William died. Selling Christmas cakes and working at BBQs. Loretta was awarded the James D. Richardson Honour Award in 2011. Loretta’s Award was for supporting William during his time as a Lion. This Award is named after James D. Richardson, who in 1958 was the first Australian to serve as a Director on the International Board of Directors. Jim Richardson was one of the most beloved and respected members of Lions in the formative years of the Association in Australia. He served in the Royal Australian Air Force during the 1939-45 World War. The demands he placed upon himself meant that he travelled enormous distances by road, so that he could visit all his Clubs, attend to Association and other business, as well as run his hotel with the great support of his wife Pam. The strains caused him to have a Cerebral Thrombosis whilst attending, the International Board meeting in New Orleans in 1959. He recovered after a long convalescence, but without his capacity to speak. He was never again capable of carrying on a conversation or making a speech but continued to work for Lions at club level and attend conventions. Lorretta made a significate contribution to the Lions Club and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Sunshine Lions Club5680.01 - William Martin - Brimbank City Council Volunteer Appreciation Certificate 2002.JPG 5680.02 - William Martin - Certificate Of 10 Years Monarch Lions International.JPG 5680.03 - Loretta Martin - Certificate Of Appreciation Sunshine Lions Club 2023.JPGwilliam martin, loretta martin, sunshine lions club, city of brimbank, lions international, marian leos, melvin jones fellowship, james d. richardson -
