Alan Martin is a realist painter who started painting seriously aged 11 and studied under Max Meldrum for more than six years, supporting himself as a dental technician for 20 years while painting. About 1965 he started teaching painting, by 1980 having more than 120 students. He was married and had 6 children. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.School 74 Three nurses donned in historical uniforms for open day at Lister House. LDS DDS by the students and graduates of Australian College of Dentistry as a mark of appreciation of his teachings during his term of office as Superintendent 1901-1906 April 6th 1906Presented to W.Orr Gray. LDS DDS by the students and graduates of Australian College of Dentistry as a mark of appreciation of his teachings during his term of office as Superintendent 1901-1906 April 6th 1906. He was awarded a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in the US, after studying in Auckland, Edinburgh and Pennsylvania, in the period 1897 to 1900.
