The Melbourne Women's Walking Club enjoyed bush walking as a hobby travelling to the north east of Victoria, using pack horses and camping on a 9 day hike. One of the woman, 'Bill' describes each day in detail - what they did, where they went and what they saw giving an insight into walking and the Bogong High Plains in the mid 1930's before the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme opened up the area. The diary mentions a photo being taken by Mr Blackwell on the 9th day, New Year's Eve 'from a lovely bush track from which, looking back at intervals we got our final glimpse of Fainter. 5 miles from from our destination'.Historic: This extract from the diary of 'Bill', a member of the Melbourne Women's Walking Club gives an insight into walking in the mid 1930's and describes the Bogong High Plains as it was then before it was opened up with a road built during the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. "The Australian Service Nurses National Memorial, designed by Sydney-based sculptor Robin Moorhouse, commemorates the role of more than 10,000 Australian service nurses who have served in times of war, including 102 who died while on active service. The Memorial is constructed from translucent blue glass and has the words ‘Beyond all praise’ on the front. It consists of two curvilinear glass walls which are etched with text and images, in a timeline sequence, portraying the history and contribution of Australian Service Nursing. Also included is a collage of historical photographs and extracts from diaries and letters, in the original handwriting. Included on the west side of the memorial are the insignias of the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force. Unveiled on 2 October 1999, the ceremony was attended by over 1000 nurses, some from World War II who were in their 80s. A fly past by the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes and royal salutes by officers from all defence services were included in the ceremony. A march by nurses carrying 102 Australian flags in memory of the nurses who fell in service plus one other flag in memory of civilian nurses who had lost their lives was also included. xvii, 388 p.; 24 cmnon-fictionThis biography explores the remarkable life of Jessie Traill - artist, traveller, humanitarian and independent spirit. From the ten-year-old who first met Tom Roberts painting on the shores of Port Phillip Bay, to a student of Frederick McCubbin and etchers John Mather and Frank Brangwyn, Jessie developed her professional skills. She interrupted her career to work as a voluntary nurse in France during World War I, later raising funds for and revisiting war-torn Europe. She also became one of Australia's most outstanding etchers, working in a field uncommon for women of her time. Through diary extracts, descriptions of her world travels and personal letters we hear her voice and see through her eyes, beauty, humour and the joys of simple living. jessie traill, frederick mccubbin, tom roberts, artist
