Based on the 1901-issued stamp, this postcard most likely originates from the 1900s. The featuring of the nursery - almost certainly Carl Axel Nobelius' nursery - in a postcard indicates its importance to the identity of Emerald in this time, becoming a recognisable major feature of the town. Dates written on the postcard suggest it could have been sent on the 27th of February, 1909, but given its message is wishing the recipient a merry Christmas this may not be accurate unless it was sent from Emerald in 1908 and then sent on from Beaconsfield in 1909.This postcard captures a view of Nobelius' nursery in full operation, taken from a perspective of tourist appeal as a symbol of the town. This item is a faded sepia postcard depicting a view from a hill over a sprawling orchard in the valley. Tall natural trees grow in the background, behind the extensive landscape of ordered fruit trees. There is a patch of bare earth and small plants in the foreground. On the reverse, there is a handwritten Christmas and New Years message.Address: "ADDRESS / Miss h [illegible] / Beaconsfield / Railway Station / Vic" Message: "CORRESPONDENCE / Dear Mary / From Aunt [illegible] / Best wishes for / a merry xmas & / a bright happy / new year / J & M.J. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society. An illustrated booklet published in 1934 about the history of the Emily McPherson Collegeemily mcpherson, higher education institutions, training colleges -- melbourne (vic.)
