This photo of WO2 Don Taylor and D-SVY COL Frank Buckland OBE was taken during a tour by D-SVY through Topographic Squadron at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1971. Wild B8 Aviograph Stereoplotters are visible inside the windows in the background. BRIG Frank Buckland OBE served in the Australian Army from 01 June 1938 to 31st of October 1972. LTCOL Frank Buckland was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1962 to 1965. After promotion to COL Buckland was appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from March 1967 to August 1972. COL Buckland was promoted to Brigadier (retired) to the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1973 to January 1976. WO2 Don Taylor served in the Australian Army from 24th October 1960 to 31st December 1987 and ended his service as a commissioned officer and reached the rank of Major. This is a set of 35 photographs of a 4th Field Survey Squadron Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants Formal Dinner held at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide SA in 1986. On this occasion WO1 Alex ‘Darby’ Munro and WO1 Geoff Briggs were farewelled. WO1 Munro retired from the Australian Regular Army after 30 years of service. WO1 Geoff Briggs continued his service and retired in 1991. It is apparent there were visiting personnel from the Army Survey Regiment and other unidentified units. This is a set of nine photographs of medal presentations at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. In photos .1P to .8P, the Defence Force Service Medal was presented to personnel in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service, or the Clasp for each further 5-year period of service. The photos were taken on four separate occasions. Photos .1P to .3P were taken on the parade ground. LTCOL John Nolan was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1965 to 1969. He was subsequently promoted to COL and was the Director of Military Survey from 1972 to 1975. MAJ Lionel ‘Bill’ Sprenger MBE, MID was subsequently promoted to LTCOL and was the CO of the unit from 1969 to 1970. This collection of 19 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was introduced in 1975. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This is a set of 11 photographs of a 4th Field Survey Squadron Officers, Warrant Officers and Sergeants Formal Dinner held at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide SA in 1986. On this occasion WO1 Alex ‘Darby’ Munro and WO1 Geoff Briggs were farewelled. WO1 Munro retired from the Australian Regular Army after 30 years of service. WO1 Geoff Briggs continued his service and retired in 1991. It is apparent there were visiting personnel from the Army Survey Regiment and other unidentified units. BHS CollectionBendigo Weekly from Friday, June 28, 2002 - Snippets of Bendigo history, the Pall Mall story, part two - by Edith Lunn. Close to the jeweller's shop, we came to Chancery Lane. Many early legal firms had their offices there. Among them were: Quick&Rymer, Luke Murphy&Don and Macoboy&Taylor. A branch of the Bendigo united Friendly Society's Dispensary opened on the corner. Other small business in the walk included a florist, men's hairdresser and a boot and shoes repairer. Moving on there was Betteridge's Agency for the Singer sewing machine company, Wilkinson's photographic studio, Sutton's music shop and Favaloro's cake shop and café the ''Savoy'' was opened in the 1920's. Whitelock and Carter had their men outfitters business in the building, Cocking's was a very popular drapery store. After Cocking's closed down, Stoneman's supermarket opened in the premises. Alongside there was a passageway that led upstairs to the office of Phillip Secher and Son, Accountants and the Bendigo jockey club. The Nillumbik Festival was introduced as a replacement for the Eltham Festival following the disbandment of Eltham Shire Council in December 1994 and the creation of Nillumbik Shire Council. It was an attempt to draw away from Eltham and be more inclusive of the wider communities in Nillumbik. However other local communities had their own festivals and the concept of a Nillumbik Festival was never widely accepted by the community and it shortly reverted back to the Eltham Fesitval in 1997.
