This glass door insert is one of a pair previously inserted into the entrance doors to the Shire of Diamond Valley offices in Greensborough. The Shire of Diamond Valley was a Local Government Area located about 20 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. The shire covered an area of 74.38 square kilometres and existed from 30/09/1964 until 1994. After the local government mergers of 1994, the Shire of Diamond Valley offices were used by the Nillumbik Council.This etched glass is a reminder of the Shire of Diamond Valley. As a large piece of glass it is fragile and could have easily been lost or broken when the Diamond Valley offices changed ownership.Clear glass door insert. Sanderson P (1988): '73 Walpole Street (Kew), 'Otira'. Built 1887. Original use - Residence. Architect - Crouch. Henry Berry, a noted philanthropist and salt merchant of Melbourne, was the original owner of this two-storey, boom-period house. Berry occupied the residence until his death in 1923 while in February the following year, the property was auctioned. Subsequently purchased by the Methodist Church for use as a training college for missionaries, a number of additions and alterations were made at that stage including a memorial chapel that was built on the property in 1957.' Otira is now a private residence. Saved from a house in Nicholson Street, Nunawading owned by the Jenkinson's. Mrs Jenkinson died in Strathdon Nursing Home, Forest Hill and was buried on her 100th birthday. Plaque made in 1922. In 1832 William McGeoch & Co., Ltd was established, by William McGeoch senior at 113 Argyle St Glasgow as hardware merchants and exporters, and later were manufacturers of lamps and electrical fittings for ship, railway and domestic use. In the 1900s the company had expanded and had offices at 28 West Campbell Street Glasgow with a factory and warehouse located at the Warwick Works, 46 Coventry Rd, Birmingham. In 1922 the company had expanded and were employing 400 to 500 people. William seniors three sons had joined their father in establishing the business around 1888. The business was run by William McGeoch senior with Williams three sons Alexander, William and Andrew also taking an active part in the day to day running of the company. The company had expanded to such a degree that they were now manufacturing a variety of ships' hardware. This included metal cabin furnishings, signal lamps, ships' oil and candle lamps, motor lamps, switches, switchboards, electrical accessories and fittings. The internal decorative scheme of Villa Alba is significant as a fine example of the work of the leading Melbourne decorators, the Paterson Brothers. It is one of their first interiors to depart totally from the use of pre-prepared wallpapers of repetitive designs and it is a rare and comprehensive extant example of their domestic work. The decorative schemes in the ground floor hall, the dining room, the drawing, the vestibule, the stair hall, the upper hall, bedroom 1 and the boudoir are also individually of significance as outstanding examples of Victorian decoration. This cabinet would have been made in the early 20th century for as office or home office furniture. It's neat brass lock and key gives the contents some basic security but could be easily tampered with. At some stage there were two additional divisions in the top row of pigeon holes, which would make fifteen compartments of equal size available. A cabinet such as this could be used to classify or sort items, for example, mail for different people, or categories of business papers such as bills, orders, receipts, pay book, bank book and so on.This cabinet represents the type of furniture available for offices and businesses in the early 20th century. Research: Stanley Morris Nye (born Ballarat in 1889, son of a Methodist minister; served AIF in WW1) moved to Surrey Hills from Auburn after 1922. He was the first occupant of 131 Union Road which was built in 1924. He is listed in the 1924,1927 and 1931 electoral rolls at 86 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. He died aged 44 years in December 1933 and Charles Leslie Mitton took over the business. Charles Leslie Mitton was practising in Newmarket prior to taking over the pharmacy in 1933, the year he also married Ethel Sylvia Stevenson. They lived at 65 Union Road until c1940 when they moved to Kenmare Street, Box Hill North.
