This shirt belonged to Dorothy May Mortlock (VF518245) who was part of the Australian Womens Army Service (AWAS). Dorothy Mortlock was born in Swan Hill and enlisted with the 3rd AUST AWS REC DEPOT.Light khaki-coloured shirt with detatchable collar (UA09.4.2), long sleeves. Shirt is fastened with five bakelite or plastic brown buttons. Three button holes along the collar line attach to detatchable collar, possibly via cufflink-style fasteners. Shoulders each carry an epaulette with a canvas badge, embroidered with the letters "A.W.A.S." in white' epaulette fastened by brown button. Light khaki to white topstitching throughout. Inscribed on interior of collar on label is "N 332 1943/Made in Australia/SIZE 13". Memorabilia - NURSE MEMORIAL, 1.5.1949
Matron (Major) Olive Dorothy PASCHKE No VX38812 enlisted in the AAMC on 3.8.40 age 35 years. Promoted to Matron 8.1.1941, posted to 10th AGH on 11.1.1941, embarked for Malaya 3.2.1941 disembarking 18.2.1941, awarded the RRC 1st Class 1.1.1942 in the New Years Honors list signed by Gordon Bennett, detached to 2/4th CCS on 6.1.1942, embarked from Singapore 12.2.1942 for Australia. She was serving in Singapore when the Japanese invaded. She with many other Nurses during the bombing left on the ill fated "Vyner Brooke" which was later bombed by the Japanese in the Sundra Straits near Banka Island. Abandoning the ship she and 5 other Nurses drifted away on a raft and never seen again on 14.2.42. Many others became POW,s, drowned or murdered by the Japanese. Her records state believed killed on or after 11.2.142 dated 8.6.1944 then Now reported missing and for official purposes presumed dead, dated 11.4.1945. Records state she was granted the promotion of Major in 1943. CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) RRC ( Royal Red Cross) AGH (Australian General Hospital)Five page "order of service" re the unveiling of a memorial to "Matron O.D. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) wee the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer Warrnambool settlers. They lived for some years at Aroona, 19 Princess Street WarrnamboolThis album is of interest as a memento of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century family in Warrnambool. The photographs will be useful for both display and research. This is a soft cover album of 16 pages. Some pages have been cut out. This album contains photographs that belonged to Warrnambool residents, Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie and appears to date from the 1960s and beyond. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Williams Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool.This album is of minor interest as a record of the lives of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family. The photographs, especially those taken of interiors of houses, will be useful for display and research. This is a brown hard cover photograph album with 16 black and white photographs and one loose newspaper cutting. The cover has a gold decorative pattern around the edges. This album came from the estate of Dorothy Ardlie of Warrnambool. It contains photographs of her childhood with her sister Agnes and other family members and later photographs in their adulthood. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) was the daughter of Ethel and Arthur Ardlie, the granddaughter of the well-known Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughter of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Dorothy lived for some time at Aroona, 19 Princess Street in Warrnambool. This album is of interest, firstly as a memento of Dorothy Ardlie, a member of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family, and secondly as a good example of a photograph album showing the typical social history of an upper middle class family in the mid 20th century. The keeping of a photograph album was a hobby of many women in the 20th century.This is a hard cover photograph album of 39 pages. The cover is brown with coloured images of a bird, tree and leaves on the front cover. The album is bound with string. There are 133 black and white photographs pasted in. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of William Ardlie, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. They lived for some years at Aroona, 19 Princess Street, Warrnambool.This album is of interest because it shows the social life of a more affluent family in the mid 20th century and documents in particular the lives and interests of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family. This is a soft cover photograph album with a light brown cover and an embedded decorative pattern on the left front cover. The album is bound with white string. The cover edges are frayed. The album has 45 pages and over 200 black and white photographs pasted into the album, four loose black and white photographs and some photographs taken from newspapers. This Bible and cover belonged to Ethel Ardlie, nee Ryan (1880-1967). In 1903 she married Arthur Stanley Ardlie of Warrnambool. Arthur Ardlie was the son of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the grandson of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Ethel and Arthur Ardlie had three daughters, Olive (1905- 1912), Dorothy (1910-1993) and Agnes (1915-1993). They lived at Aroona, Princess Street, Warrnambool.These items are of great interest firstly because they are examples of the type of Bible and cover that families owned in the mid 20th century. Also they are mementoes of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the 20th century, with the Bible containing important information on this family. .1 This is a Bible with a black cover with gold lettering on the spine. The cover is stained. The pages contain the Old Testament (1086 pages), a Family Register section, the New Testament (306 pages) and some coloured maps. Amongst the pages are two pressed pansies and two loose sheets. .2 This is a brown tooled leather cover for the Bible with a brown silk lining and a brown cord attached to the top of the spine for use as a bookmark. This notebook comes from the estates of the Misses Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Ethel and Arthur Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early Warrnambool settlers. The notebook has been used in 1954 as a visitors book and later as an address book and a notebook for recipes, messages etc. The significance of ‘A la Ronde’ or ‘In the Round’ on the opening page is not known. This notebook is of minor interest as a memento of the Misses Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool (20th century)This is a small notebook with a light brown cover with an ornamental gold edging around the front cover. The cover is somewhat stained. The pages are gilt-edged and contain handwritten signatures, names and addresses and notes.
