Commemorative trowel from Wesley Church St Kilda, 22 October 1857. Alexander Fraser (1802-1888), businessman and politician. Fraser lived at St Kilda and in 1857 was elected to its first Municipal Council; in 1859 he became chairman and mayor in 1864-65. An active churchman, he held most important offices in the Wesleyan Church and for thirty years was treasurer of the supernumerary fund, which he helped Rev. Daniel Draper to found. Dour and pious, Fraser was conscientious in fulfilling his political duties. He presided at numerous meetings and laid countless foundation stones.Silver trowel with polished wooden handle. Rev. Daniel J. Draper (1810 - 1866). Arrived in Australia in 1820 where he worked for ten years in NSW and Vic before going to SA where he worked for the next 20 years. He built the Pirie Street Methodist Church. He left SA in 1855 returning to Victoria where, in 1859, he was elected President of the Australian Conference. Rev Draper returned to England in 1865 where he was appointed representative to the British Conference from Australia. This medal/badge was given to Wilfred Clarence Busse, born in Chiltern in 1898, supposedly during his time at Wesley College. The lion on the badge is a perfect match for Wesley College's logo, and the words Sapere Aude are the school's motto. Busse completed his secondary education as Wesley College in the early twentieth century, and went on to study law at the University of Melbourne. As a lawyer, he spent time in the room of Supreme Court Judge Bernard Cussen (1859-1933). Judge Cussen was popular, known for being just and precise and for completing through statutory consolidation in his spare time. As well as working as a lawyer, Busse wrote historical fiction inspired by his life in Chiltern, these included The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia" and "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties," which won the T.E.Role gold medal for the best historical novel in 1930 and went on to become a best seller. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum until his death in 1960. Wesley College was founded in 1866 in St. Kilda by Rev. James S. Waugh, Dr James Corrigan, Rev. Daniel Draper and businessman Walter Powell. Wesley College was a founding member of the Associated public School of Victoria in 1908. Originally a boys school, coeducation was introduced in the 1970s, and the school continues to function today and has a reputation as one of the best schools in Victoria witth regards to VCE and IB scores. This item is significant for its connect to W.C. Busse and his literary and non-fiction work inspired by Chiltern. The object is a metal-open work badge depicting a stylised lion surrounded by a oval, which appears to resemble a belt, and bears the words Sapere Aude (translation Dare to be Wise). Below the main body of the badge is a short chain attached to a safety pin at the other end. Lindsay F.J. Hillman was born in Ballarat in 1910, and attended the Ballarat Junior Technical School. He became a cadet in Electrical Engineering Laboratory at the Ballarat School of Mines where he gained eventually gained a student Teachership for diploma studies at the School. Hillman was particularly active and excelled in a wide range of sporting interests and in student activities. In 1928 and 1928 he was awarded the Ballarat School of Mines Honour blazer by the Old Boys' association for all round athletic ability, leadership and scholarship. After spending two years with the Melbourne City Council Electric Supply Department gaining industrial experience Hillman was awarded his Diploma of electrical engineering in 1931, returning to the School in 1932 to teach apprentices and senior students. Hillman was appointed lecturer in Engineering Design and Graphics in 1937, lecturer in Engineering Design and Civil Engineering in 1944, Lecturer-in-Charge of Mechanical and Civil Engineering in 1948 and Head of the Electrical Engineering Department in 1949, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. In 1975 Lindsay Hillman was appointed to the Council of the Ballarat School of Mines and played an active role in school affairs.As Vice-President of Council from 1981 until his death in 1991 Hillman took a leading part in the implementation of many of the major building projects on the Lydiard Street Campus. The L.F.J. Hillman Award was established by the Ballarat School of Mines Council in conjunction with and through the generosity of the Hillman family in honour of the late Lindsay Frederick John Hillman. The bronze medal was presented annually to an enrolled student in an accredited course in the field of electrical/electronics studies at the Ballarat School of Mines. specific Criteria for the Award consisted of a balance of academic performance, leadership qualities, commitment to further study and involvement in sporting and/or community groups. Photocopy of a published page, marked as Eightieth Anniversary, relating to records as showing Golden Square as the first place in the Bendigo area at which the gospel was preached. On arriving from South Australia in 1852, attracted by the news of gold in the area James Jeffrey widely known later as Jimmy Jeffrey, a preacher who noticed that the sanctity of the Sabbath was being ignored, with normal chores and entertainment being the order of everyday. In short, little regard was shown for religion and there were no ministers. With a tree stump as his pulpit Jimmy began service by singing a Methodist hymn heartily, attracting a band of diggers to listen, with continuous services in Golden Square taking place ever since. Jeffrey continued with similar activities with increasing interest and attendances. Beginning with a tent surrounded by a fence a disused shed was bought and relocated to the site and was the finest building in the district. Late in 1852 the first real Church was erected in place of the shed and the tent. Enthusiasm and numbers of attendees swelled and in 1859 Reverend Joseph Dare and Robert Lisle and other church leaders purchased land (for 30 pounds) and had the foundation stone for a new Church building was laid by Reverend Daniel J.Draper on19th of April 1859 with Divine Service and Public Worship conducted from 11th December that year by Reverend Mr Draper. A collection on the day raised 262 pounds. The foundation stone for the present Church was financed by Richard Allingham laid on 5th January 1870. The first minister who went to the district was Reverend Mr Symonds who was stationed at Forest Creek near Castlemaine. Reverend Richard Hart was the first minister stationed at Golden Square.
