The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. In 1945, more than three out of every four men and one in every four women were regular smokers. While rates of smoking decreased over the next two decades due to observations and research regarding the links between smoking and illness, an increase in tobacco use was documented after the advent of television as people were bombarded with advertisements for cigarettes.This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. Beehive smokers douse bees with smoke to calm them and make them less likely to sting while honey is extracted from beehives. They were invented in the mid nineteenth century, prior to which bees were killed in order to extract their honey. The invention of the bee smoker was an important innovation in the history of apiary. The Wodonga Historical Society beehive smoker appears to be of the same design as the patented Woodman’s Bingham Bee Smoker, produced from 1878 by T. F. Binghan of Albronia, Michigan. The Wodonga Historical Society beehive smoker is an important artefact connected to local history, and the history of apiary in Wodonga. Beekeeping was a popular pastime in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and apiaries were subject to regulation by the Wodonga Shire Council. At a 1914 meeting of the council, for instance, a by-law governing beekeeping in Wodonga was enacted after Mrs Smyth complained that Mr Bassett’s bees were swarming the watering holes in her paddocks and preventing livestock from drinking. There were areas within the Wodonga township where apiaries were prohibited, and Mr Bassett’s bees had fallen foul of the law. The doily is part of a larger collection of textile items owned by Alice Matilda Barrie who was born in 1885. According to family members Alice was a talented crocheter and it would be presumed that she crocheted this doily as it is similar to patterns available in the 1940s. The doily is an example of a handcrafted crocheted object used to decorate homes in the late nineteenth and early 20th century.A hand crocheted oval doily in the pineapple pattern. To the left and right are two large 'leaf' shaped motifs which are repeated to a smaller scale on the top and bottom of the pattern. The four motifs are placed around a central flower shape. Vickery's Emulsion was a household furniture and leather polish comprised of turpentine and beeswax. The company was a partnership of James Stanley Vickery and Joseph Stanley Vickery trading as J. S. Vickery and Son, of Main Street, Ballarat, Victoria. Their jars were manufactured by the Bendigo Pottery and came in a range of coloured glazes manufactured in the 1900s and 1920s.A relatively common tall cylindrical jar from Bendigo Pottery manufactured for J. S. Vickery and Sons of Ballarat. In very good condition with no chips or scratches. Dates from early twentieth century. Attractive brown speckled cream glaze.Tall antique cylindrical Jar probably manufactured by Bendigo Pottery contained Vickery's Emulsion, which was used as a furniture polish and leather preservative. Jar has a yellowish cream brown speckled glaze in very good condition. Opening 4 cm. Some glaze imperfections at base of jar. Vickery's Emulsion trade mark impression found at top of cylinder just below the shoulder. Bendigo Pottery trademark impression not found on this example. The first section of Studley House, now part of the preparatory school for Xavier College conducted by the Society of Jesus in Kew, was built in about 1857 for Parliamentarian John Hodgson, an early settler in the district, as a two-storey residence in the Classical Revival style. The name Studley House was first recorded in the Kew ratebooks in 1862, after the house was purchased in 1860 by James McEvoy, squatter. Alterations and an extension, designed by William J Ellis were undertaken in 1875. The house was again altered in 1919 during the ownership of John Wren, former bookmaker, ALP lobbyist, influential Irish-Catholic and millionaire. After 1969 the house was used by the school. (Victorian Heritage Database, 2023)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers (1905-1973), donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian from the 1960s to the 1970s. For the First Peoples of south-eastern Australia, making possum skin cloaks has long been a culturally important practice. But during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, possums and other native animals were also heavily hunted by white colonists who coveted their warm and fashionable furs. Early twentieth century examination chair constructed of metal and leather. The structure is metal and painted with cream enamel. The seat and seat extension are covered in brown leather. It has two folding sections with metal leg rests, and a base on castors. There are three holes in each arm rest, possibly indicating missing attachments. Miners' picks were commonly used in the nineteenth and early twentieth century for extracting gold from underground mine tunnels.Found in the Harrietville area. Similar to those used in the nearby Kiewa Valley where prospecting for gold was also an occupation.Formerly KV 071. Handmade - of steel with a wooden handle. It was used to break up rock and ore, making it easier to extract valuable minerals. This early twentieth century ribbon and metal bookmark commemorating Scottish literary hero Sor Walter Scott is one of the favourites, and a highlight in this enormous collection of bookmarks in Australia.A popular early twentieth century souvenir bookmark of Scottish literary giant Sir Walter Scott whose works are represented in the library at Hymettus. Although there are several bookmarks of Scott in the collection, this is one of the highlights of the collection at Hymettus which is believed to be the largest bookmark collections in Australia. Mt Bute Station was a pastoral lease originally established c.1840 by Duncan Hoyle. The lease was later transferred to Charles and William Oakley (c.1853), and then to Matthew Hamilton Baird (c.1858). Sir Samuel Wilson acquired the lease in 1872 and purchased the property in 1873. Mt Bute was subdivided for soldier settlement blocks after World War I. The home block - house and 700 acres - is currently owned (2018) by the Collins family.Faded photograph mounted on cream-coloured card, which shows a family outside the residence at Mt Bute pastoral station. The photograph is undated but is believed to have been taken in the early twentieth century. Photograph shows two men, and a woman seated in chairs outside a house. A row of shrubs is across the front of the house. Two young boys are standing either side of the woman. Two young girls are standing on the steps leading to the entrance of the house. The two young women are cousins, left Katerini Paxinos Lekatsas (Lucas), and Marigo Kekatos (Boura). They migrated to Australia from Ithaca in early twentieth century. This is one of two travelling trunks at Hymettus. This has been used by at least two generations and was originally used by Michael Taffe as Assistant or Acting Station Master around Victoria in the early twentieth century.This tin travelling trunk was used by Michael Taffe ASM when travelling by rail around Victoria for his work in the early twentieth century.
