Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews.Demonstrates a MMTB Tram depot run number plate that was carried by each tram when in service.Pressed metal plate with corners trimmed, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a yellow background and the letter "P" and numbers "41"painted in black, to give a Run Number Plate for East Preston Depot. Photograph shows the side of W6 class car 979 in Plenty Road approaching the Bell Street intersection with sliding doors open and carrying passengers. This car entered service in 1955 but has minor panel damage on its front left side below the saloon windows. In front of the tram is a crossover/shunt and several motor vehicles waiting in traffic and parked at the kerb next to shops. Among the parked vehicles are passengers waiting for the tram. The Bell Street intersection is controlled by Marshalite ‘clock-face’ traffic signals that were designed and built in Melbourne from the 1930s and used at many intersections until the late 1960s. Beyond the intersection on the left but out of sight is the new East Preston Tram Depot opened in 1955 when this electric line in Plenty Road was extended to the city via High Street, Smith Street and Bourke Street. Photograph shows newly built W7 class car 1020 inside the newly built North Fitzroy car shed in at the Nicholson Street central bus depot. The tram shows a destination of Special and approx 10 suited men with hats stand in clusters either side of the tram with one at the controls. These men may be Board members and senior officers inspecting the new facilities. This shed, the new East Preston Depot and 40 W7 tramcars were constructed to service the newly built electric line along Bourke Street to East Brunswick and East Preston - just before Melbourne hosted the 1956 Olympic Games.
