Photograph shows the side of W6 class car 979 in Plenty Road approaching the Bell Street intersection with sliding doors open and carrying passengers. This car entered service in 1955 but has minor panel damage on its front left side below the saloon windows. In front of the tram is a crossover/shunt and several motor vehicles waiting in traffic and parked at the kerb next to shops. Among the parked vehicles are passengers waiting for the tram. The Bell Street intersection is controlled by Marshalite ‘clock-face’ traffic signals that were designed and built in Melbourne from the 1930s and used at many intersections until the late 1960s. Beyond the intersection on the left but out of sight is the new East Preston Tram Depot opened in 1955 when this electric line in Plenty Road was extended to the city via High Street, Smith Street and Bourke Street. The photograph shows Q class tram 200 in St Georges Road alongside a SW6 class car possibly No 896 (East Preston route 9) and another sliding door tram is running a route 9A ahead of No 200. Q 200 is running a special service to West Preston for Preston Workshops employees - see image of the photo sleave. On the right hand side of the photo is an advert for Capstan cigarettes. This site later became a Shell service station. The track in the foreground leads into the Thornbury Depot. Q 200 was withdrawn in 1955 and sold in 1957. Photograph shows newly built W7 class car 1020 inside the newly built North Fitzroy car shed in at the Nicholson Street central bus depot. The tram shows a destination of Special and approx 10 suited men with hats stand in clusters either side of the tram with one at the controls. These men may be Board members and senior officers inspecting the new facilities. This shed, the new East Preston Depot and 40 W7 tramcars were constructed to service the newly built electric line along Bourke Street to East Brunswick and East Preston - just before Melbourne hosted the 1956 Olympic Games. This night-time photograph shows a side on view of an unnumbered W1 class tramcar covered with hundreds of light globes, including on the raised trolley pole. Much of the drop centre is blocked by a large drop sheet that is also lit and painted with flags. Numerous clusters of flags are placed along the sides of the saloons. Behind the tram is the administration office block at South Melbourne Depot. As tram drivers understand, driving such an illuminated tram that draws so much power from the overhead would not be an easy task. The Duke and Duchess of York visited Australia in 1927 to open the new Parliament House in Canberra. They also visited Melbourne in April that year. They became the King and Queen of Australia in 1936.
