Safeway entered Australia in 1963 when the American retailer Safeway Inc. purchased three Pratt's Supermart stores in Victoria, owned by supermarket pioneer Bill Pratt. Safeway Australia then became one of the most recognisable supermarket brands in Australia, particularly in Victoria, where the name remained in use for decades after the chain was acquired by Woolworths in 1985. Following the takeover, Safeway stores in New South Wales and Queensland were progressively rebranded as Woolworths, while the Safeway name was retained throughout Victoria because of its strong local recognition. On 22nd August 2008, Woolworths announced that the Safeway name would be phased out and all remaining Safeway supermarkets in Victoria would be rebranded as Woolworths. The change was introduced gradually over several years, with stores displaying signage such as "Woolworths, the new Safeway" to ease the transition. The last Safeway store, located in Wodonga, Victoria, was rebranded on 6th June 2017, bringing the Safeway name to an end in Australia.Safeway played a major role in modernising Australian supermarket retailing. Its large self-service stores, extensive product ranges, and suburban shopping-centre locations helped shape grocery shopping habits in Victoria during the second half of the twentieth century. For many Victorians, especially in Melbourne's suburbs, "going to Safeway" remained a common expression well after the chain became part of Woolworths. Red Spot Specials were one of Safeway's most memorable advertising and promotional campaigns in Victoria during the 1980s and 1990s. Main Road East is one of St. Albans principal commercial streets and they capture the character of the town centre during a period of ongoing change and development. The images capture various business including the Turkish Take Away Food Shop, Australian & Continental Butcher, Hot Bread & Cakes, Commonwealth Bank, Fruitmart and Liquorland. Main Road East, formerly Boundary Road, served as the municipal boundary between the City of Sunshine and the City of Keilor. The south side of the roadway fell within the City of Sunshine, while the north side belonged to the City of Keilor. Following the statewide restructuring of local government in 1994, both sides of Main Road East were brought under a single municipality, the newly formed City of Brimbank.These photographs are significant for documenting Alfrieda Street, one of St. Albans principal commercial streets, during the early 1990s. Under the proposal, the existing bottle shop (Pictured) is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility fronting Sunshine Avenue.The photographs are not the earliest view of the hotel as at one stage the hotel was a much simpler building with some detached accommodation rooms. These accommodation rooms have been demolished. The Kealba Views Hotel, now the Kealba Hotel is a suburban hotel (Pub) located on the intersection of Main Road East and Sunshine Avenue, St. Albans / Kealba. The hotel serves Kealba, St Albans, Keilor Downs, and the northern edge of Sunshine. It has been operating for several decades and is familiar landmark for locals travelling along Sunshine Avenue.
