Historical information

Main Road East, formerly Boundary Road, served as the municipal boundary between the City of Sunshine and the City of Keilor. The south side of the roadway fell within the City of Sunshine, while the north side belonged to the City of Keilor.

Following the statewide restructuring of local government in 1994, both sides of Main Road East were brought under a single municipality, the newly formed City of Brimbank.

Significance

Although Main Road East was administratively divided between two councils, the community on both sides of the road functioned as a single, integrated community.

Major institution, including Errington Reserve, the principal St Albans sports ground, St Albans High School, and St Albans Statio, were all located on the south side within the City of Sunshine, yet they served residents from both councils.

The northern side developed into the suburb’s main shopping strip, with grocery shops, banks, medical practices and several churches forming its civic and commercial focus.
