Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1988, document roadworks being carried out in Sun Crescent, Sunshine. The images capture the disruption caused to local traders, pedestrians and vehicle traffic as improvements were undertaken in the town centre.

The photographs were taken from a first-floor balcony of the Derrimut Hotel and provide a valuable streetscape view of central Sunshine during a period of change. Visible in the background are Tuckerbag, the former Sunshine Police Station (since demolished), and the former State Bank of Victoria, all significant landmarks within the Sunshine commercial precinct at the time.

Significance

These photographs are significant for their ability to document a period of change and redevelopment within the Sunshine town centre during the late 1980s. They provide a detailed visual record of infrastructure improvements and their impact on local businesses, pedestrians and traffic, while also capturing several prominent commercial and civic landmarks that formed part of Sunshine's historic streetscape.
