Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, feature Peter Garrett at the Victoria University St Albans Campus on University Boulevard, St. Albans.

Peter Garrett addressed conservation and biology students in Room 3C42 of Building 3 before visiting the University’s Grasslands Resource Centre, a facility dedicated to the study and preservation of Victoria’s native grassland ecosystems.

Best known as the lead singer of the Australian rock band Midnight Oil, Peter Garrett was also one of the nation’s most prominent environmental advocates. Alongside his music career, he campaigned extensively on environmental and conservation issues and served as President of the Australian Conservation Foundation, helping to raise public awareness of the protection of Australia’s natural environment.

Garrett later entered federal politics, where his long-standing commitment to environmental issues led to his appointment as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.

Significance

Historically, the images reflect the increasing prominence of environmental concerns in public discourse at the turn of the twenty-first century and highlight the contribution of educational institutions in fostering environmental awareness, research and stewardship.

They are also significant for their association with Peter Garrett, one of Australia's most recognisable environmental advocates and a future federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts.
