In the 1840s–1860s, Keilor was a major stopping point for travellers heading to Mount Macedon, the central Victorian goldfields, and pastoral runs to the north and west.

The road running through Keilor was therefore known as the Mount Macedon Road and later shorten to Macedon Street, long before the Calder Highway system was formally gazetted in the early 20th century.

As the highway network developed, the route was progressively renamed and realigned, leaving the Keilor section with the heritage name Old Calder Highway.
