Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1988, feature past and present members of the Sunshine Ladies Cricket Club gathered at Dempster Park, Phoenix Street, Sunshine North.

The Sunshine Ladies Cricket Club was one of the early women's cricket teams active throughout the Sunshine district, including Sunshine, Albion and Braybrook, during the mid-twentieth century.

The club emerged during a period of growing participation by women in organised sport across Victoria, when local sporting associations, schools, factories and community organisations were increasingly providing opportunities for women to compete and engage in recreational activities.

Significance

The club contributed to the development of women's cricket in Melbourne's western suburbs and formed an important part of the district's sporting and social history.
