Historical information

In 1993, Dobson Kindergarten in Maidstone faced a significant funding shortfall that threatened its ability to operate at normal capacity. The issue emerged during a period when many early‑childhood centres across Melbourne’s west were struggling with rising operational costs, ageing buildings requiring maintenance, changes in state funding formulas, and increased demand for services from young migrant families.

Dobson Kindergarten was particularly affected because it relied heavily on a combination of council support, parent fundraising, and state early‑childhood grants. When expected funding did not arrive in full, the kindergarten was left unable to cover essential expenses such as staffing, materials, and building upkeep.

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1993, were published after parents and staff organised a campaign calling for increased government funding.
