Historical information
These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1999, were part of the paper's feature "Church Life Project" of various churches throughout Sunshine.
These photographs are of Rev. Pastor James Pearce of the Church of Christ located at 81 - 83 Hampshire Road, Sunshine.
The Sunshine Church of Christ was one of the longstanding Protestant congregations in Sunshine, serving the local community for much of the twentieth century.
Sunshine's Church of Christ congregation had existed by at least 1926. This building was constructed in 1936.
In August 1938, the church hosted prominent Aboriginal leader, footballer and preacher Doug Nicholls, who conducted both morning and evening services.
The church was part of the wider Churches of Christ movement, a Protestant denomination with roots in the nineteenth-century Restoration Movement. Churches of Christ congregations emphasised New Testament Christianity, congregational independence, baptism by immersion, and active lay participation in church life.
Significance
The Sunshine Church of Christ was an important religious and community institution in Sunshine throughout much of the twentieth century.
Located on Hampshire Road, it served as a place of worship, fellowship and community gathering for local residents.
The church reflects the role faith-based organisations played in supporting social connections, community activities and spiritual life during Sunshine's development as a major industrial and residential centre in Melbourne's western suburbs.
