Historical information

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, feature several torchbearers participating in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay as it passed through the City of Brimbank.

The images capture participants carrying the Olympic flame during their designated leg of the relay, an honour bestowed upon individuals in recognition of their achievements, community service and contribution to society.

The images also capture spectators lining the streets, proudly waving Australian flags as they gathered to watch the relay pass by, despite the cold conditions of a Melbourne winter night.

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay carried the Olympic flame from Olympia, Greece, across Oceania and throughout Australia before the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games. Over a period of 100 days, the relay visited more than 1,000 Australian communities and involved approximately 11,000 torchbearers selected in recognition of their achievements and contributions to society. The relay was intended to unite communities and share the spirit of the Olympic Games across the nation, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron by Cathy Freeman at the Opening Ceremony in Sydney.

The 2000 Olympic Torch Relay pass through Deer Park, Ardeer, Sunshine, Braybrook and Maidstone on day 52 of the relay.

Significance

Being chosen as a torchbearer in the 2000 Olympic Torch Relay was a prestigious honour that recognised an individual's contribution to their community and their embodiment of the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
